Christmas Music That Doesn't Suck 2014 Edition: Day Seven
Jingle Bells - Mike Tompkins
Love this guy so much. I've posted a lot of stuff by him over the past few years. My favorites are probably Paradise and Misery, and of course Acapella. Another one I would love to see live. He actually toured with Karmin last year, jealous.
2013 was Charlie Parra, 2012 was Sungha Jung, 2011 was Glee
In fact I like him so much that I'm adding another song to my list for this post:
Up on the Housetop - Mike Tompkins
Another song I'm not sure why wasn't already on the list of songs to post. Awesome version, love him. Check out his newest mashup of Shake it Off and Pompeii.
Winter Wonderland/Don't Worry Be Happy Mashup - Pentatonix
While I usually scroll through a bunch of options and pick which one I want to post, I knew exactly which version of this one I wanted to post. If you're only going to listen to one out of this entire list of Xmas music, make it this one. Love it so much.
2013 was the Andrews Sisters, 2012 was Jason Mraz, 2011 was Dean Martin
Please Come Home For Christmas - Ben Haenow
While I haven't seen a single episode of The X Factor - mostly cause I can't stand its creator - I do love this clip. He's great. Oh and look, he won. Congrats. Well deserved.
2013 was Bon Jovi, 2012 was CeeLo Green
2011 Day Seven - Dashing through the melted snow in some untied tennis shoes
2012 Day Seven - If not for Christmas, by New Year's night
2013 Day Seven - Do you want an arm or a torso?
I could write a blog. I have thoughts.
Life at the library, adventures with friends and other hysterics...

While I didn't see this one - obviously as I did not know it existed - I did see him sing White Wedding at Warped Tour in Denver in '05. It was fantastic.

Vegas Take Two
So, remember how the boyfriend surprised me with tickets to Vegas and a suite at the Luxor for Christmas/my birthday?
After I drug him all over that place last time we went cause I'm obsessed with ancient Egypt?
We went and it was awesome.
DAY ONE:
::"Move your little Versa!" "Oh my god would you people just drive."
- Okay, so my boyfriend rarely drives the speed limit. When I say that you assume that means he drives like a crazy person, no, he drives 10 UNDER the speed limit. It's a gas mileage thing, I don't know. However, when he's forced to drive the speed limit cause we're running behind his road rage is hysterical. Excellent way to start off a trip.
::Some planes, no trains, few automobiles
-The first flight was from Omaha to Denver and it was fine, the second flight out of Denver to Vegas was a completely different story. While in the airport I heard this kid screaming and jokingly said something like, "they're gonna be right next to us" and was horrified when I was right. Not only were they close by, they were directly behind us and the screaming kid was bouncing on the tray table the whole ride. Pretty sure the dad heard a few expletives throughout the trip.
::Landing
-So, I learned the best way to fly is to not check your bags because once the flight lands you're free and you don't have to wait for anything. This was beneficial because we landed at six and were going to a concert at seven. Turns out, the doors only opened at seven so even though we landed at six, ran to get a cab at 6:15, arrived at the hotel at 6:30, checked in at 6:45 and made it to the House of Blues by 7 we still had to stand in line for half an hour, and the concert didn't start for another hour after that. All that freaking out about us being late and missing stuff and it was all for nothing.
::Pentatonix
-The concert - once it got started - was awesome. But as mentioned, the line to get into it was huge, almost around the entire outside of the inner hotel. Fortunately we met a nice local who advised us on what to do and what to avoid. They sang some awesome stuff, but my favorite was their cover of Lorde's Royals, scroll, down, it's fantastic.
We got out of there around 10 - apparently if you have kids until 16 at the concert there's some sort of curfew that it can only go so late. Was fine by me, I was exhausted, though not as much as the boyfriend. He had been up for almost 40 hours already.
DAY TWO:
::Hoover Dam
-Originally we were supposed to go on a hot air balloon ride that morning, however it was cancelled that day (and the next because of weather, meaning we're going back in the fall to redeem our tickets) so instead we decided to rent a car and go out to the Hoover Dam. It was awesome, we had the best tour guide who had actually taken men who helped build the dam on a tour so he had a bunch of anecdotes from them as well. And of course, there were the dam jokes. "Did they tell you about the camera policy?" "No." "That's cause we don't have one, take all the dam pictures you want!" Hilarious. After touring the dam we walked all over - I drank some dam water out the fountain - and took a ton of pictures.

::Walmart
-Apparently when driving a rental car this is the appropriate way to park.

Or not. Smooth. But at least we didn't get door dinged. We stopped by cause he needed swimming trunks. While we were there we picked up some snacks - bugels, beer, flavored water, chips and salsa - and then headed back to the hotel.
::Hot Tub
-Did I mention how awesome our room was?

It even had a hot tub. Which was perfect after spending all afternoon walking all over the damn dam. After jamming out in there for a while he konked out on the bed. It was humorous cause it was like 9 and he was dead. But as mentioned, he hadn't exactly gotten a lot of sleep that week.
DAY THREE:
::Buffet
-So, when you're in Vegas, hit up a buffet. They are fantastic. This one wasn't as fantastic as the Wynn buffet - holy crap, read last time's post - but it had a ton of food and I could only eat like half of my plate.
::Walking through the desert in the rain
-Of course the day we decide to walk the strip it rains. In the middle of the desert. But it was okay, we just toured a bunch of the buildings to avoid the major pouring. Although so them pouring is like sprinkling in Nebraska. While we were touring we ran across Big Elvis - he was in fact very big and dressed like Elvis so it was a fitting name - and I drug him in circles around Caesar's just to find this massive mythology fountain.
Ancient Egypt isn't my only obsession, I'm also a Greek Mythology fan as well.
We also hit up the M&M's factory, and the Coke store. Have you been in that M&M's place? It's crazy!

Those are all M&M's in those tubes.
::More Hot Tub
-You can never spend too much time in a hot tub. Well, I guess, once you get all wrinkly then it feels weird, but we decided once we get a house we're getting a hot tub. Okay, I decided, but I'm sure he would support that.
::The Mix
-As part of going to Vegas I wanted him to take me out somewhere fancy. Packed a skirt and everything. Before Vegas he even went shopping to get new clothes - tie included. He picked the Mix which is one of the top 5 restaurants in Vegas (inside the Mandalay Bay hotel). The scenery was incredible,

view included:

I had chicken, he had cod, we agreed it was the best food we've ever eaten. My only complaint was that it was packed super tight in there so we were literally less than a foot away from the people sitting next to us.
::Zombieland/Castle
-After dinner we headed back to the hotel and I crashed because we had an early flight in the morning. He konked out in the hot tub - again, would totally have support in getting one. I turned on Zombieland and made it through like five minutes before I was out. Aside from Zombieland we watched a ton of Castle. It was on during the plane ride out there, then that night after the concert, then the next day when we were in the hot tub, and now the boyfriend is hooked. Or I claim he is anyway. The last one we watched there ended in a cliffhanger - they were stuck in the freezer - so when we got back I put in my DVD and we watched the next episode.
DAY FOUR:
::4AM wakeup
-Flying out earlier in the morning is cheaper, but it sure isn't as fun, however, neither flight involved screaming or jumping children in my vicinity so I was okay with it.
::Home
-As soon as we got back we stopped at Amigos for food, he picked up this model train he was waiting on, and then we just slept the rest of the day. Very relaxing.
So that was Vegas take two. Hopefully take three will happen some time this fall cause hot air ballooning sounds awesome. Lots of fun, though it was nice to be back and not have to put on makeup every morning...
Song of the Trip:

"I have to work to keep this figure." "You don't work very hard."
Sketch just called my new hair style "tame" and "classy". If you've seen my current hair style you may not characterize it as those things, but that just means you haven't seen my previous hair colors.
She labeled my old hair colors as "screw you society". I guess this is a bit more reserved than previously.
It's also way short, but I'm getting used to it.
So, as most of you know by now we didn't end up going to the graduation service as planned due to mad weather in Missouri.
However, it didn't stop us from celebrating here.
And it was kind of nice to have a lazy weekend to fall back on.
I got off of work at 3 on Friday so I came home and took a nap - it was glorious - did some laundry then the boyfriend came up and we watched White House Down.
Scale of Awesome 8/10. I liked it. I've actually wanted to see it for a while. I didn't realize Maggie Gyllenhaal was in it. She was great.
So that was Friday, Saturday the boyfriend took me out for lunch.
Well, brunch.
No, it was lunch.
But it was breakfast at lunch.
What constitutes brunch exactly?
Anyway, breakfast/lunch and then we went shopping.
Well, we wandered the aisles of Menards for a while looking for presents for him.
I am now officially done with all my Christmas shopping.
Minus my cat, that is.
Still have to get him toys to go in his stocking.
Though I won't put them in until last minute cause otherwise he'll try to knock it down like last year.
Cat nip.
After that we met up with my family - Cool Aunt and son included - for dinner.
What is ironic is that originally I was supposed to be spending the weekend with my parents, boyfriend, and Second Sister's family in Missouri.
What really happened is that I had supper with my brother's family yesterday then my Oldest Sister's family today, completely missing Second Sister's family all together.
Weirdness.
After dinner we went to his place, watched the VH1 countdown and some of Larry The Cable Guy's Christmas special - welcome to Nebraska - before I headed back.
Today was Bubby's Christmas program so went to that this morning, dinner with Oldest Sister's family as mentioned and then - because I had nothing else to do, huzzah for lazy weekends - I came back to my apartment watched more of Arrow season one - made it to disc 3 and loving it - and took a nap.
Oh and played Angry Birds on my new iPad Air. Graduation present from Mom to replace the one I had as a GA after I had to give it back when my job was done.
I now have far too much time on my hands, I think I played that and Hearts for like 2 hours.
See what I'm turning into?
It's okay, work tomorrow will fix that. Gotta get ready for Christmas - sorry, can't say Christmas - Holiday Party for my teens. The joys of working for the City.
Anyway, the Holiday Party is this upcoming weekend right before my graduation party so I'll be all celebrated out by midnight.
Quotes of the Weekend:
Brother: "That's an ugly seven."
Boyfriend: "I have to work to keep this figure."
Nephew: "You don't work very hard."
President: “We got some knives in the kitchen.”
Kale: “WHAT?”
President: “They're big knives.”
Kale: “Great, you can make me a sandwich.”
To be truthful I'm kind of glad I didn't go to the ceremony. It would have sucked to drive that far in that weather, plus you have to wait in line to be announced and since it was an online school I didn't know anyone anyway.
This way they'll mail me my diploma and I'll celebrate my way with my friends and family next weekend.
Should be fun.
Alright, on to Christmas Music that Doesn't Suck: Day Two
Today's songs are:
Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer - Jesse Hite
2011 it was Elmo and Patsy, 2012 it was them 30 years later
even though the world seems to hate this song i'm posting it anyway cause i like it. and this kid is actually pretty good. he did this 365 days of music where he covers something new every day, it's pretty cool.
oh my god he covers what does the fox say? weirdness. Everybody Talks and Pretty Woman are probably my favorite of his covers.
Little Drummer Boy - Pentatonix
2011 it was Sean Kingston, 2012 it was Kevin McHale
i posted one by these guys last year so i can officially say i was a fan before they got big. they're all over the place now. yes they seem like big nerds but it works for them.
Santa Baby - Megan Nicole
2011 it was PCD, 2012 it was Eartha Kitt
elf selfie anyone? i enjoy that he proposes and she walks away. crazy cool voice for a kid.
you may know her from some of her covers: Lazy Song, Never Getting Back Together, and Payphone, all have view counts in the millions. my favorite is probably Just Give Me a Reason.
2011 Day Two - "That's just Joe's Finger and Pandemonium"
2012 Day Two - So hurry down the chimney tonight.
legit pre-midnight post, holy crap tag in use.

I feel it in my bones, enough to make my systems blow.
Last day of my internship.
No more half and half days.
Went in with a pen and marker in my pocket - some patients aren't allowed to use pens but they can use markers - notebooks under my arm, and chocolates for Mr. BossMan Tom.
The good ones. If you haven't had Baker's chocolates made in Nebraska you are missing out on life.
He got me a gift too. A copy of Leaves of Gold with a Catching Fire bookmark.
Now I have fancy quotes to use in my blog like...
Poor indeed is the man whose mind is not enriched by some phrase of lasting truth and beauty which serves to restore his soul in the exigencies of life.
Take that!
No, I love it, it's got fancy binding and everything.
Yes, that's my librarian jargon. Fancy binding.
One of my favorite library memories is actually about binding - my coworker was looking at the cover of this giant Lana Turner book. So me - trying to make conversation - was like, "hey, is that Lana Turner?" and she was like - "oh, I didn't even notice I was just admiring the binding." Giant - like giant - picture of her face on the cover and like 3 minutes of staring at the book.
We're nerds, have I mentioned that already?
Anyway, after practicum I came home and wrote up my monthly report, submitted it, updated the spreadsheet and then sent everything to Mr. BossMan Tom. So I'm officially done with practicum.
Final Count-Up 90:20/90.
I'm sad it's done. And just when we were making progress with our internet policies. Will have to stop by and check in every once in a while. Gonna miss it.
Back to 9-6 every day.
Which used to be exciting.
Gonna have to reinvent my 9-6.
Actually started that today as I shifted and weeded the entire Young Adult collection.
Took me 3 hours to shift everything - I started weeding it last week but finished this morning - but now there's more space cause I talked Superwoman into giving me another unit, and I also added a nonfiction section cause before it was just thrown in with the fiction and if you weren't looking specifically for it you wouldn't even know it was there.
We'll see how long it lasts.
So that was my day. Good but sad. Glad we're closed Thursday and Friday. Gives me some time to finish up my final homework assignment EVER and set up the Christmas trees.
Or at least get started, we'll see.
Song of the Day:
Radioactive - Pentatonix feat. Lindsey Stirling
awesome cover. i posted an xmas video of these guys last year, they're crazy good.
the song's been stuck in my head all day. am i the only one that thought the words were "ready to rock you"? i mean, i figured it out after they sang it twice on the voice but on the radio that's what it sounds like.
welcome to the new age, to the new age.
Fancy binding.

to the moon, alice!
Christmas Eve with the boyfriend's family today.
They didn't have to get me anything but I came home with quite the load.
The boyfriend and I bought presents together this year. Which is kind of a big deal.
And while getting ideas on what he wanted was much like pulling teeth when it came to my gifts he totally swept me off my feet.
Remember how I mentioned that he kept singing Payphone over and over this weekend? I said something to the effect of Maroon 5 was coming to Nebraska along with Neon Trees and Owl City and it would be cool to go.
Not knowing that he had already bought the tickets
...and that that was the reason the song was stuck in his head.
And they're good seats.
So there was that.
And a blu ray player.
Which I was thinking about buying for myself but holding off for xmas money. Actually the same model that he got me.
Best boyfriend ever.
I got him lots of stuff since we're having 2 Christmases but nothing can top those really.
His family is awesome. His brother got me the Batman trilogy on Blu ray - perfection for first set of blu rays - plus a Husker sweatshirt that I'm currently wearing, a sweet Husker stoplight that the Cool Aunt will totally be jealous of, some cool water bottles, and a wicked bag that says "I like big books and I cannot lie" which makes me laugh amongst other things.
Plus some stuff for Carter.
They rock.
Tomorrow morning is Christmas with mom and dad and then more stuff with the boyfriend's family - extended this time.
It's interesting. If you would have told me last year that now I'd be in a serious relationship spending Christmas with the boyfriend's family I would have laughed.
Though I never think in terms of years, it's always in terms of five years.
Because I'm not a fan of the future and I don't like change so throwing out theories about things happening five years from now is much less stressful than a year.
Does that make sense?
Before it was:
In five years from now maybe I'll have someone.
In five years from now maybe I'll be married.
Now it's more like:
In five years from now maybe I still won't have kids.
Don't get too excited about that one, he says stuff about not having them either.
Though my mother would kill me and his mother has already told me she expects three.
No pressure.
Where was I before this tangent?
Today.
It was great. Soup for lunch, then presents, watched Short Circuit #1, went to church and then watched Short Circuit #2 - which I gave him on Blu ray - apparently he used to watch them over and over as a kid.
Not bad. Interesting to see G.W. Bailey before he was Provensa. Same attitude about life but less gray hair.
And that's basically today. Tomorrow I'm excited cause I got Mom a lot this year. And Dad some pretty cool stuff as well. Though this is only a few things since the majority of our stuff is saved for New Years with the rest of the family.
On to the music.
Christmas Music that Doesn't Suck: Day Eleven
Alright, it's getting down my favorite songs of all time.
Carol of the bells - Pentatonix
they're pretty good.
though i'm having mixed emotions about this video.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas - Christina Aguilera with special guest Brian McKnight
love her.
can't be replaced. even if i do like shakira.
one season though, just one season and she'll be back.
Oh Holy Night - Hey Monday
yes, i know. if you know me or read this blog this version really shouldn't be that big of a surprise.
but to be fair i was a big fan of them before she turned up on the voice.
didn't stop me from choosing her as my number one.
and see how well that worked out?
team blake all the way.
so yes, that was my favorite religious holiday song. and if you were around for last year's 12 days of music you already know what i'm going to post for tomorrow's pick but stay tuned anyway.
For last year's Day Eleven go here
Legitimate pre-midnight post. Holy crap tag in use.
