Today was good.

They fixed YA.

aka the Young Adult area.

Made it less like a waiting room, expanded it, yet closed it off to the creepers waiting to get into the computer lab...pretty much everything that I asked for so I'm happy.

Gonna take the TAB kids for a detour after the meeting, see what they think. And if they have interest in making posters to deck out the new area.

What else?

I finally caught up with supplies, well the requests at least. They're submitted and everything will get ordered by the end of the week...

Went grocery shopping, put air in my tires, did laundry and dishes...

Ummm...oh, switched out the "teen scenes in green" display for one on National Humor Month.

Which is apparently April.

Had no idea 'til I cruised the Chase book in search of display ideas.

Also didn't realize there are like 5 library-related holidays in the month of April.

There's like National Library Week and then Library Worker day and like School Library Day and Drop Everything and Read Day and then there's another but I'm blanking. I'll check tomorrow.

I love that book.

Chase's holiday calendar - that's how I found out about Spunky Old Broad's month. And that display rocked man.

It's just filled with the most random holidays ever. And they're all documented!

Like April 15th is "Well That Sucks" day.

Yes, I'm completely serious.

Because it's tax day but it's also the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

So everything sucks about that day.

Hence the holiday's title.

There's also a day in April - which again I'm blanking the exact date though I'm sure I could google it - that is Louie Louie Day. Like the song. Apparently it's been covered more than any other rock song in history and there was some mention of it almost becoming the state song for Washington.

Sketch and Edit's Excellent Adventure is quickly approaching.

Which is awesome as I haven't seen her in months.

We're gonna jam out, drink, eat, take some pictures...I'll come back with quotes and stories of pure awesomeness. Even though we don't have any definite plans, we're better at just making it up as we go along.

As for today, it was awesome. I guess. Not like stellar awesome, but not awful, okay so it was more like mediocre. According to Ellie if you use the word "awesome" for everything it becomes mediocre. She's the one engaged to "Captain Awesome" on Chuck, he calls him that because everything he does is awesome, even flossing.

So I guess my day was mediocre.

I got all the way through the Summer Reading manual. It gives all these activity ideas. Our theme is darkness and night, but their ideas are completely morbid like tour a morgue, talk to a coroner, design your tombstone, write your epitaph... seriously? Creep factor.

Also switched out my display and cleaned the YA area. I had a books to movies display, now it's "The Name is the Game" where I went through and pulled a bunch of books with clever titles, "Jesus in your Backpack", "Death by Latte", "Then He Ate My Boy Entrancers" - i have no idea what that one's about but I'm intrigued.

I also ran into a bunch of fun titles about getting over your ex, I'm saving those for Valentine's Day, that should be fun.

So that was work, after that I watched Castle - oh my god hysterical when they find the hidden camera I died at their conversation - then finished my homework, woohoo! We had to evaluate 3 online catalogs and make a chart.

I actually ran in to the easiest catalog I've ever seen which was new and exciting, but also - and this is a shocker - a catalog from hell.

It's pure evil.

And it's not ours.

OH MY GOD, you can't place holds through it, you can't tell what format an item is unless you go into the physical record, the search results aren't sorted, you can't limit your findings, there's not advanced search option, I was like seriously?

I mean, I know our catalog is confusing, but at least it gives you results, with this one you're screwed if you don't know the exact title and author.

I still have to add some stuff to a group discussion thing but the physical assignment is done and posted, woohoo!

I moved from my predecessor's old desk to a desk of my own - for some reason I had two desks even though technically I had no desk at all. Which doesn't make sense, but it does make sense if I explain it correctly.

I wasn't assigned a desk - they just needed a place to put incoming supplies since I'm in charge of it, so it went to the desk it was going to before. Then Mentor cleaned off an area for me in a youth workroom so then I had that desk, but not really as it was never assigned.

Now it's assigned.

Sort of.

Superwoman is still figuring stuff out.

Doesn't matter, I don't really need a desk, I don't know that I'd actually sit at it and use it, I just need a place they can put the supplies that I will know to check so I can grab them and distribute them. It's easier than running up to 3rd floor all the time just to check.

Moving desks was just one of my off-desk hours, the other I spent cleaning up the YA area. Now all the shelves are edged nicely and the displays are full and in the right places with the right statuses...I give it about 12 more hours before it's back to destruction.

And I won't even be there to fix it, that's right! I'm at the home branch tomorrow! All day!! With the new new guy, who I guess is actually an new old guy since he worked there before but that was before my time. I have yet to meet him though I hear he's awesome.

It'll be cool going back and getting to work there again. Plus it'll be nice since it's a little slower there I can actually make progress on my The Help booklist. I've got my titles, now I just have to come up with short summaries to go along with them. Plus a main thing about the original book. Maybe throw in something about the movie. Who knows. I'll send it to Info-Man when I'm done, he's the genius with this stuff so he can fix it if it sucks. Which I don't think it will. I've got plenty to choose from. There's a serious amount of material on civil rights fiction - especially with the southern states.

I'm sorry, nerd moment.

Aside from that I talked to Sketch and we continued planning for Sketch and Edit's Excellent Adventure: Year One. We picked a weekend between our birthdays and a location halfway between our current locations to meet up, jam out, take pictures, troll the streets of whatever the name of the town is that we're staying in. And the countdown has begun. 22 days. Then it's on.

We are talking hotels, she found one that has a log cabin theme. Then there's one with a Victorian theme. Which led us to a discussion on whorehouses. Not sure why. Which led me to explaining the difference between a whorehouse and a whore's house. Cause you gotta have more than one living there to make it a whorehouse, right? Cause otherwise it's just a whore's house.

All the while avoiding the decision about choosing a room - which is what we do best. We're all about avoidance. I told her to pick whatever, I'm fine with it. She didn't like that.

So maybe I'll stick you guys with the choice.

What's the best option for a hotel in the middle of Iowa?

Log cabin theme?

Victorian theme?

Regular room?

See, a normal person would pick a regular room. Cause the others are weird.

And yes, we're weird but not that weird. We wouldn't stay in it cause we prefer it that way, we'd stay in it cause it's weird. And I could take pictures.

But the project is a mess.

I scanned the whole YA aka Young Adult section and now we're having to deal with the things that were checked out when I scanned the rest.

Basically they're pulling all the incoming stuff and I'm dealing with it individually before shelving it with the rest.

It's gonna be a mess.

It already is a mess.

But I'll handle it, I have a plan.

And I sent out like 5 e-mails about it so hopefully people have some sort of understanding on why there are piles and carts of YA material spread throughout the first floor when the YA area is on the second floor.

Like I said, mess, but I'm handling it.

I was at the desk for a couple hours but it was mostly off-desk projects that took up the majority of my time today. Did my first set of supply rounds today, super exciting.

And actually finished going through the YA section, now all that's left is the display area. It's not much of a display, Girlscout says it feels like a waiting room. I'll fix it. Eventually.

It was weird though cause I kept delegating things to Friday.

Not that I didn't know it was Thursday, I did subliminally. It says that in big bold letters on the schedule I stared at on multiple occasions today.

Maybe that's cause I'm working more than ever before.

I'm used to weeks off from school and snow on the ground.

Now I'm doing nothing but work and there is not a single flake of snow on the ground.

I've now realized that I have to take Carter to the farmhouse for Christmas. He will love it, he loves the farmhouse, more specifically the basement.

Seriously weird cat.

Cause no one likes that basement, it's creepy.

I cleaned out the whole thing, painted the walls lime green and blue, made a lounge out of the thing and I still don't like the basement. Though it's still got the paintjob and my awesome Harry Potter and Scooby Doo stickers all over the wall.

But he likes it. There's this giant cabinet thing that my brother covered in radio station stickers - no idea why - that he sits on top of and crawls up into the ceiling. No idea where that leads. Or if I should be worried. Or why there's a hole there in the first place.

I think he also likes it because there are window wells that the outdoor cats sit in. Ha! you're out in the cold and I get to lounge in the heat. I will now stare you down. Yes, look away, look away jealous outdoor cats. Though not as pleasing as when he struts back and forth inside the glass doors while the outdoor cats stare at him in spite. I'm so cool and you're just cold.

He's a punk.

A big fat one.

But he's my punk so I love him.

So does his grandma on occasion.

But never grandpa.

Ironically that's the only person he doesn't bite.

Big day tomorrow. Off at 4 to pick up Grams, then it's the pitch party, then gotta pack up my big fat cat and all the rest of my stuff to go jam at the farmhouse for a few days.

It's funny, work makes the day fly by so fast - who can say that and mean it, seriously I love my job - but I was hoping this week would go slower. I don't want Christmas to be over yet!

Christmas time is here, Happiness and cheer

I gave my big fat cat one of his catnip presents early. He's chasing it around the apartment as we speak. Glad he can be entertained by some fabric. Totally exciting.

So, today, was crazy surreal. I was not at the desk all day. I know, right?! I worked on my YA Project and Supplies stuff for the most of the day, and actually made progress. My problem, at the moment, is that I went through the whole YA section and changed all the statuses so they say they're in the YA area, however, some of them still say they're on display while the other half don't. And none of them were on display, I pulled them from the stacks. So, I got the joy and pleasure of going back through them all again. Dylan helped for a while, she rocks. I started at A while she worked back from Z, all I have left tomorrow is Mac-Peters. Awesome. Plus supplies stuff, now that my awesome mentor in supplies has left.

Retirement party for him was today, there was a serious amount of food in the breakroom. It could probably feed a family of 4 for about a week. I am sad that he is leaving, he was always fun to work with. Entertaining and fun to talk to. Plus he always made sure to make sure I was okay with all the supplies stuff, showing me where to find everything and how to place orders for things. I'll be missing that next week when we mysteriously run out of an item and I go flailing up to 3rd floor in an attempt to find some.

After the joy that is work I met up with the Cool Aunt for sushi. She proves yet again why she's so cool by giving me the leftovers. So I'll be eating those probably around 2AM tonight. Yes, small children sleep more than I do, get over it.
We talked about Tokyo Red as a hair color, library stuff, and the awesomeness that will be the family Christmas party on Friday. I'm picking up Grams and bringing her and we're gonna play pitch, drink margaritas, give out gag gifts - I found that freaking dancing baby and I know who I'm giving it to! - and just jam out with the family. I'm stoked.

Alright, as exhausting as today was I'm sure tomorrow will be double that. Lots of people coming in to get stuff before the weekend. We're closed 24-26, I'm stoked for that many days off in a row! Plus the 1-2 of January, and I'm not scheduled on the 31st so add those to the list as well. Awesome! But, then our next break isn't until like February for President's Day so I'm taking these days and running with them.

"Christmas Time is Here" Charlie Brown

Charlie Brown has been one of my favorites ever since Junior year of high school when we did "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" for our drama production. I was Peppermint Patty, red hair included. I think that was probably the most fun I had in high school ever. Joking around backstage, doing the Macarena to the Kite Song, stealing Mak's gum and putting it in Stuart's Valentine card, that he opened on stage and had to keep a straight face. Came backstage after that scene and whispered, "who put gum in my valentine?!" That was awesome. We always threw in a bunch of random stuff during the Sunday performance. Lot of improv on those ones.

HA! I found them. Well, some of them anyway. Though a lot of them are on Facebook.

Oh god, just found more that aren't on Facebook. Makeup central, don't get your hopes up, I'm skipping those.

Though there are plenty in the Arsenic and Old Lace album since I was the minister's daughter and she wore nothing but dresses and silver high heels. I had to sit on the windowseat box for 8 pages re-applying my makeup. That was fun. Didn't know there was a dead guy in the box at the time.

I got to hunt rabbits, jump rope, blow giant bubbles with my bubble gum, answer questions in a Dear Abby format, pledge allegiance with liver and onions for all - wrote that myself, playing air baseball and fake throwing it around the stage, dying our hair at Mak's house, buying velcro shoes for Linus, the fun goes on. Best play ever. Seriously.

See, this is why I loved high school and hated college. Maybe if I was more involved in college stuff that would have been different. In high school it was drama productions, One Act stuff, choir tours, basketball manager, yearbook, newspaper editor, in college I did nothing. Just homework.

That was enough really, with the mass amount of reading that comes with being an English Major and taking 4 lit classes at once, there's not a lot of time for anything else.

And I'm 2 points behind.

Cause Glee-Loving Boss still gives me crap about flu shots, even moreso after he planted the "flu mist nasal spray" flyer in my mailbox. That was prank number one. I wear the flyer around in my nametag cause it's funny and I'm random like that.

But my nametag also says I'm 30 percent off at Target, so there.

And This Issue is Not For Checkout, comes aplenty as well.

What else are you supposed to do with all those stickers after you take them off the magazine barcodes? You put the new magazine on the display rack and have to take the sticker off the old one.

There's pretty much just a buildup of randomness in and on my nametag.

And I'm keeping this one.

I've had to tape it multiple times since it keeps falling apart.

But that happens when you're an Aide. It gets caught in everything. Our Supply Queen sent me a pack in bulk just cause I kept asking for them. I'm keeping this one.

It also has my star - since GLB stuck one on my forehead one day mid-shift (no warning) and said I was the star. I put that on my nametag, along with the giant Mickey Mouse sticker he gave me saying I could get another if I went to get a shot.

Not happening.

At least the Mickey Mouse is sort of fitting as now I'm sort of Youth Services.

Partly.

But I'm sad cause I don't want this one to fall apart like my last one did. And that had my gold star on it from Space Cadet from the "She says I should get a sticker. Or a gold star. Or a pizza." conversation when she said I deserved it for having over 100 percent in Superwoman's point system.

So I wrote that to Superwoman who replied, "Oh good grief, she would say pizza." Then told me my prize was a snowflake sticker "compliments" of her, aka the ones on the desk we give out to kids that she didn't even know existed until she showed up that morning and said, "wow, cool snowflake stickers!" Compliments, HA!

That also went on my nametag.

But it's hanging on my door so it's cool.

Oh the sacrifices of being an Aide. Or having been one. Although my work hasn't necessarily changed as I was kind of a jack of all trades there. I'm still one, just in a different building. Like today, when there's computer problems they call on me cause Virtual Services has the weekends off.

Or taking care of the YA section. I'm weeding through that fairly quickly despite spending the majority of the day at the desks. I got through to the J's. But they started at Z so that's progress.

Lots of pulling books, putting them on carts, taking the elevator downstairs, scanning all the books and changing statuses, weeding the ones that don't make the cut, putting the rest back on the cart, taking the cart back upstairs, and re-shelving them.

And going with that, apparently my back is screwed for future use.

We had this seminar thing during a staff meeting when this dude came out from Risk Management to talk about back safety.

Giving us examples of what not to do.

Well, I do that daily.

Woops.

Maybe not as often anymore since I'm not an Aide. But there's still a lot of that involved in checking in and moving carts and all that.

Do you know how awkward it is to "belly up to your work" when you're pushing a cart? I keep kicking the bottom of the freaking thing.

So, if my back fails on me I'll just be like my Supplies Predecessor and get to call 911 and actually say, "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!"

Alright, new responsibilities include Supplies which is basically a job in itself. Not so much at the home branch, but the work branch, geez. You know how many printers and copiers and stockpiles of supplies are in a 4 story building?

At least most of the units fend for themselves so it's not like every room needs to be supplied. Just mostly floors one and two. And a little in the basement.

I can handle that.

But add to that I got backup to Fearless Leader in Damages.

Again, fine.

I was already doing that anyway at the home branch. There is about double the amount of items to worry about from there to here, but it's still the same process. Mostly. Except here we can just run down to the basement to TPD and retrieve a part that was missing instead of sending it over through delivery and wait for it to be processed.

Whatever, those are cake compared to this next one.

Okay, how do I explain this really without the nervous ramblings. I'll save those for later.

Pretty much the Young Adult Librarian for the work branch. Except without the title.

They gave me the Young Adult Section and TAB.

aka Teen Advisory Board.

Which is filled with teenagers.

Who plan events.

Like a prom.

At the library.

Yes, a prom.

At the library.

No pressure.

Can I just say how much I'm loving having a mentor on this one? She's fantastic! Youth librarian and has been doing this for years, and although I'm sure she'd love to dump it all on me, she's graciously sticking with me for a few months until I'm alright to take over.

Aaannd, along with all that goes with joining the Youth Services crew, aka getting the emails and going to the meetings.

Today was some prime real estate in that department. Never did I ever realize how important something such as a start date is.

Summer Reading Program.

Does it start the day after school ends, or do we wait until June 1st like always?

Kids come in the day after wanting to start.

Do we tell them to wait a week and come back on the 1st?

It's always been June 1st to July 31st.

Super easy to remember that way.

But do you really want to tell a kid to come back next week because we're not ready for them?

That was the debate today. It got heated enough to be interestingly humorous.

I sat back in awe.

I knew librarians were passionate and anti-stereotype, but this was a whole new experience there.

Apparently that's serious business.

And it is. I'm sure there will be more heated opinions when it's brought up again.

But there's time for that later. Today was pretty cool, getting to meet people involved in the whole process and listening to them promote picture books.

And "volunteering" (I use that word loosely as it was more like my mentor and Girlscout aka my two supervisors in this thing pointing to me when they asked for one) to help out with some stuff.

It was a cool changeup from the norm.

I'm looking forward to the challenge actually.

I don't want to shake things up though, things run pretty smoothly as they are.

I do, however, want to take stock of supplies and come up with some sort of spreadsheet of everything and where it's stored. Cause that would be a good thing to have. But I'll get to that later.

My current project is the YA area, aka going through and weeding older books because we're out of space. So I get to do that while I pull every book from the shelf, scan it and change the status, meanwhile watching the last checked out date and how many circ stats it has so I can weed properly.

That'll take me a few days purely because I'm still working at the desks and the lab through the day. I only get to work on those projects and assignments when I'm "off-desk" or scheduled to check-in in the back if there's nothing to check-in.

Gonna be a wild ride.

But like I said, I'm stoked for the challenge.

I think I can handle it.

I'm sure there will be some bumps in the road. A lot of freak out moments.

But I've got some great people to look up to in these areas so I'm not too worried.

At this moment anyway.

Ask me in about a month when things are in full swing.

So that was my day.

At work.

There was more after.

Headed out to Barnes and Noble to support Squirt and Bubby as they sang and played piano there. It was a fundraiser of sorts where part of the proceeds went to the school and all that. Kind of a cool deal. So I got a lot of Christmas shopping done.

Although I'm still clueless on a few people.

I'm gonna look for some more stuff tomorrow when I go grocery shopping.

Originally I was gonna go to the farm tonight but the roads suck again, and with my luck on the roads lately I'm putting nothing to chance in that category.

So, I'll sacrifice all that by sleeping in and watching some more Leverage. I'm caving and gonna start season three tonight.

Season two will get here, eventually.

Freakin' snow.

While some of us are living it up in Hawaii!!! Yeah, enjoy your beaches and drinks with the umbrellas in them. The rest of us will jam here in the snow. Just bring me back something nice.

i've posted the radio version of this multiple times, but i just found this one and loved it. there are two video videos of this song, one whose graphics will make you dizzy and the other in which they walk through places like a forest and the desert. and there's a lot of underwater camera work. and spinning. which i guess could make you dizzy as well. so i'll give you this one. it's a fantastic group, they're not american so you probably haven't heard of them. i find them delightful.

-Short Skirt, Long Jacket - Cake aka the themesong to Chuck, but I love it
-Signed Sealed Delivered - Stevie Wonder another classic jam song
-Since You've Been Gone - Theory of the Deadman was my first music rec on here and I still love it.
-Someone To Watch Over Me - Ella Fitzgerald Mak made me sing this one for voice lessons.
-Something To Talk About - Bonnie Raitt, just always had a thing for this song, no idea why. but it makes me laugh.
-Strangers Like Me - Everlife the original version is good but i like this one better
-Strawberry Wine - Deana Carter this one comes with a long story and some good inside jokes, mostly revolving around Jess and me singing it on camera - yes much like our remake of "Leave Get Out" by JoJo, except there was no remake, just a different interpretation. Which I would totally post but similar to the other video, she'd kill me.
