Yes I go there every day and yes they know me by name.
Today was hamburgers.
I ate mine on the way to a TAM meeting.
TAM = Thursday Afternoon Meeting
Redundant since we call it a TAM Meeting, but a meeting nonetheless.
With all the Youth Services staff.
We picked our favorites for upcoming Caldecott.
Yep. Libraries full of nerds, get used to it.
That was the highlight of today.
Tomorrow I get to spend my day in chairs.
Dentist and Hair Dresser.
You can track my life by the color of my hair, I've lost count of how many colors I've gone through.
There was red, blonde, purple, orange, blue streaks, black and brown. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.
It was amusing because right after I started dating the boyfriend - this time - I told him I was going to get my hair dyed and he goes, "not red, right?"
As in fire engine red which I had for both high school and college.
Can you tell we've dated before?
No, not red.
Nor will it be tomorrow. Though it would be awesome. Superwoman said she'd give me points for that, but I'm guessing now with the Master's it would be frowned upon.
I'm supposed to be all professional and all that.
Tie my shoes.
Match my socks.
Now I do neither, guess that'll have to change next week when I get the diploma.
Or maybe I'll be a rebel and continue to do neither.

I'll be out back. Gonna find a tree to chop down.
Huge day today.
Started off with an active shooter staff meeting.
Meaning we watched a video on what to do if a shooter came into the library, then went around the entire building basement to fourth pointing out where to go if you were in those places.
It was intense, but fun since it was the entire staff. Most meetings are just Public Service and Interlibrary Loan. Sometimes members of Tech Process stop by, but that's it. This was administration - director-ess included - all the way through the aides.
Though a little freaky knowing the reason behind it. Superwoman says they classify the library as a "soft target" because it's a bunch of women and children and shooters want to go somewhere they won't be defended against by men or something.
But I guess we're not the only ones running through this stuff so it's smart.
It brought up some interesting shooter in the library stories, I guess we had this criminal run into the library to hide from police and SWAT came in with guns drawn.
Reference Queen said she looked through a window and saw everyone down on the ground.
Exciting stuff.
But that was like years and years ago.
What was really interesting though was immediately after the meeting our morning stats sucked.
Like seriously sucked.
We've started tallying individual online so you can count totals end of the day, but the morning was totally low compared to other days and the Library Judge says it was cause of the meeting, like we were too freaked to reach out to customers or something, haha.
So that set the tone for the day, I think I had like 25 stats by the end of the day, it was bad. It wasn't like I was lazy, I was up and out, though a few of those hours I spent off desk or in the backroom so I guess that limits numbers.
Plus it was Valentine's Day so it wasn't like the place was hopping.
Anyway, so that was the meeting and immediately following, MEANWHILE I realize that my phone isn't in my pocket and go completely nuts.
Cause I need my phone.
And my iPod.
In my pockets at all times.
Both of them.
Or I will go insane.
So I had to go home over lunch and get it.
Thankfully it was in the apartment, I was all freaked I had dropped it somewhere.
More post-meeting paranoia I guess.
Anyway, so got my phone, handed out my Valentine's.
Yes I brought Valentine's cause I like them and they're fun. Last year I went with Angry Birds and Fun Dip - but none of my older colleagues knew what Fun Dip was - I told that to BossLady and Boss's Boss's Boss's new Assistant and they were like WHAT?! cause who doesn't love Fun Dip, seriously? - so this year I stuck with M&M's.
And Scooby Doo.
With tattoos.
They were awesome.
I brought one to the Magician - who is my savior all the time at work, I flail to her constantly - and she was like "I haven't gotten one of these in years!"
Sad day man, gotta have Valentine's.
So I gave out mine with M&M's and then majestically found a Fun Dip in my desk from last year so I gave that to BossLady as well.
Okay so that was all in the morning, then went home for lunch to get the phone and picked up Arby's on the way back - the afternoon was pretty slow, worked the desk, shelved DVD's, had to dig through Books on CD to find new ones cause display shelves were empty, it gets to be around 5 and I realize I haven't taken a break yet so I did and I spent it putting makeup on.
Hey, don't give me that look.
I only spent my break doing it to so that I wouldn't have to wear it all day long.
So I'm not a girly girl, stop looking at me like that.
Anyway, it was good timing cause about ten minutes after that I'm back at the desk, sorting DVD's when I hear this whistle from Mentor and look up to see the boyfriend at the desk holding a bouquet of flowers.
See, last year I got crap cause he sent me flowers and I turned like beet red. I still remember it I was in the reference workroom and Fearless Leader comes in with them and I move so she can get passed me, thinking she was taking them to Girlscout and she just keeps standing in front of me.
So yeah, beet red.
And I'm sure this year was even more cause he was there in person. And then of course Queen of the Known Universe gives me crap but she's allowed cause out of everyone there she probably knows me best. So she's earned it.
But I love them, they're pretty.
The only challenge now is keeping them somewhere Carter won't eat them.
Which is a challenge, believe me.
So that was like 5:30ish, after work I meet up with him at the apartment and look over the recipe that Mom sent - and bought ingredients for so she was sure I would make it, though she forgot the vegetables so we had to go get those.
He mixed the egg, Bisquick, and milk while I did the chicken, soup and vegetables then added them together in a pan. Left it in the over for about half an hour and it actually didn't turn out too bad.
Was kinda fun, like last year when we made the lemon chicken. Might have a new tradition going.
Whilst waiting for dinner to cook we started Moonrise Kingdom.
I was actually really interesting, I give it a 7/10 on the Scale of Awesome. Bruce Willis really surprised me - I had never even heard of it 'til it crossed the desk at work, but when I saw the cover and then that he was in it I knew I had to check it out cause it just seemed like such a non-him kind of movie.
Also, I'm sensing a theme as this is the third movie we've watched that's had Frances McDormand in it. First was Promised Land, then Almost Famous and now Moonrise Kingdom. Plus I have Fargo checked out so it could be four!
Speaking of Bruce Willis movies....
dude I'm so stoked.
I watched the first one every night for like 2 months.
Granted I'd only make it through like ten minutes before I went to sleep but it literally became a routine and I still laugh.
If you haven't seen it you should go check it out, 10/10 on the Scale of Awesome.
Alright, that's enough rambling out of me. Gonna eat what's left of the leftovers and then crash.

okay, so not the official video as the album just came out and they don't have one. Apparently, someone took Girls Generation's "Paparazzi" video and put Maroon 5's "Lucky Strike" over the top of it.
But the clips match the beat so it works.

Dark Lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one.
For some reason today was exhausting.
Which is weird, because nothing that big happened.
There was a staff meeting in the morning - we're integrating the oversized nonfiction in with the regular sized nonfiction - something that all the other libraries have already done or didn't divide up in the first place.
Basically, they wouldn't fit on the normal shelves, so they were shelved seperately. But, since it was obnoxious to look in two places for the same subject, we're adjusting the shelves and putting them together.
Should be interesting, but the main part of that is: are they all going to fit in the one room? and if not what are we moving out of the room, etc. Glad I'm not part of that whole process. Granted they asked for our opinions this morning, but still, totally glad I'm public service and not at supervisory level. That doesn't sound like a fun thing to figure out.
What is funny though is that when I went in to interview initially for an aide position - this was back in May of 2010 - they were already talking about the integration, here it is 2012 and they're just getting around to the measuring.
But it takes planning. And technically everything got pushed back when we changed operating systems.
Now I'm just wondering, if they're planning to build a new library...what year is that gonna be done?
But I love my job. And I'll leave that to the pros and stick to the desks. Today I was actually at the desks all day, which is new. Lately either they're tired of me or they don't think I'm getting enough done while off-desk cause I'm rarely scheduled for public service. That's my theory anyway.
I miss the desk.
So today was good.
Even though currently I feel like the walking dead and all I want to do is sleep.
Which is why this is going to stay short.
I got some more homework done, I've officially read everything I need to read. Now I just have to write the paper, post it online, e-mail the prof with some questions, e-mail the people that weren't at the interview, and send out the thank-you's to the ones that were.
But like I said, walking dead and fading fast.
After that I gotta edit the stories and format the camp music, then next week I'll focus more on the interview paper and whatever else homework assignment is due. There are a lot in February.
Since I have Saturday off and my only real plan is lunch with the Cool Aunt I might be doing a lot of that stuff on Saturday night.
Today? What happened today? I'm thinking. Something really funny happened, I remember laughing at something. I don't remember what it was.
Oh, yes I do. I was talking with my Trainee about the computer lab - there are like these privacy protection covers over the screen so that you can't see what the person next to you is viewing. I call them dashboards, even though they're not really a dashboard. But then again, what is the definition of a dashboard really? Right now being half asleep that sounds like the weirdest term in the world. Anyway, she laughed, so I was like what do you call them? And we came up with a whole list of what they could be called.
And then, similar to right now, I couldn't think of a term I wanted to use and was like "what's the name of that big blue thing that blocks off the restroom?" and she replied "a gift from god?" I was actually going for partition or divider - as something like that is normally used as - but gift from god works too.
It did turn out to be one today, as I was walking by the restrooms on my way to lunch.
Me: "You know what's really disturbing?"
Slim Shady: "What's that?"
Me: "Seeing a guy walking out of the restroom and still buttoning his fly."
So it was a gift from god, cause I could have seen even more of that if it weren't for the partition.

i have no explanation for choosing this song tonight...other than because it sounded like fun.
Okay, falling asleep, I'm out for the night. I'll figure out the rest of the homework stuff tomorrow. Too tired to be logistical or rational or is logistical actually a word? Cause that looks weird.

And we're back to Chuck, I'll turn that on and crash.

Alright, assignments are announced so now I'm allowed to freak aloud.

Well, I guess aloud as well, but there will be none of that.

Alright, new responsibilities include Supplies which is basically a job in itself. Not so much at the home branch, but the work branch, geez. You know how many printers and copiers and stockpiles of supplies are in a 4 story building?
At least most of the units fend for themselves so it's not like every room needs to be supplied. Just mostly floors one and two. And a little in the basement.
I can handle that.
But add to that I got backup to Fearless Leader in Damages.
Again, fine.
I was already doing that anyway at the home branch. There is about double the amount of items to worry about from there to here, but it's still the same process. Mostly. Except here we can just run down to the basement to TPD and retrieve a part that was missing instead of sending it over through delivery and wait for it to be processed.
Whatever, those are cake compared to this next one.
Okay, how do I explain this really without the nervous ramblings. I'll save those for later.
Pretty much the Young Adult Librarian for the work branch. Except without the title.
They gave me the Young Adult Section and TAB.
aka Teen Advisory Board.
Which is filled with teenagers.
Who plan events.
Like a prom.
At the library.
Yes, a prom.
At the library.
No pressure.
Can I just say how much I'm loving having a mentor on this one? She's fantastic! Youth librarian and has been doing this for years, and although I'm sure she'd love to dump it all on me, she's graciously sticking with me for a few months until I'm alright to take over.
Aaannd, along with all that goes with joining the Youth Services crew, aka getting the emails and going to the meetings.
Today was some prime real estate in that department. Never did I ever realize how important something such as a start date is.
Summer Reading Program.
Does it start the day after school ends, or do we wait until June 1st like always?
Kids come in the day after wanting to start.
Do we tell them to wait a week and come back on the 1st?
It's always been June 1st to July 31st.
Super easy to remember that way.
But do you really want to tell a kid to come back next week because we're not ready for them?
That was the debate today. It got heated enough to be interestingly humorous.
I sat back in awe.
I knew librarians were passionate and anti-stereotype, but this was a whole new experience there.
Apparently that's serious business.
And it is. I'm sure there will be more heated opinions when it's brought up again.
But there's time for that later. Today was pretty cool, getting to meet people involved in the whole process and listening to them promote picture books.
And "volunteering" (I use that word loosely as it was more like my mentor and Girlscout aka my two supervisors in this thing pointing to me when they asked for one) to help out with some stuff.
It was a cool changeup from the norm.
I'm looking forward to the challenge actually.
I don't want to shake things up though, things run pretty smoothly as they are.
I do, however, want to take stock of supplies and come up with some sort of spreadsheet of everything and where it's stored. Cause that would be a good thing to have. But I'll get to that later.
My current project is the YA area, aka going through and weeding older books because we're out of space. So I get to do that while I pull every book from the shelf, scan it and change the status, meanwhile watching the last checked out date and how many circ stats it has so I can weed properly.
That'll take me a few days purely because I'm still working at the desks and the lab through the day. I only get to work on those projects and assignments when I'm "off-desk" or scheduled to check-in in the back if there's nothing to check-in.
Gonna be a wild ride.
But like I said, I'm stoked for the challenge.
I think I can handle it.
I'm sure there will be some bumps in the road. A lot of freak out moments.
But I've got some great people to look up to in these areas so I'm not too worried.
At this moment anyway.
Ask me in about a month when things are in full swing.
So that was my day.
At work.
There was more after.
Headed out to Barnes and Noble to support Squirt and Bubby as they sang and played piano there. It was a fundraiser of sorts where part of the proceeds went to the school and all that. Kind of a cool deal. So I got a lot of Christmas shopping done.
Although I'm still clueless on a few people.
I'm gonna look for some more stuff tomorrow when I go grocery shopping.
Originally I was gonna go to the farm tonight but the roads suck again, and with my luck on the roads lately I'm putting nothing to chance in that category.
So, I'll sacrifice all that by sleeping in and watching some more Leverage. I'm caving and gonna start season three tonight.
Season two will get here, eventually.

While some of us are living it up in Hawaii!!! Yeah, enjoy your beaches and drinks with the umbrellas in them. The rest of us will jam here in the snow. Just bring me back something nice.

Alright, new responsibilities include Supplies which is basically a job in itself. Not so much at the home branch, but the work branch, geez. You know how many printers and copiers and stockpiles of supplies are in a 4 story building?
At least most of the units fend for themselves so it's not like every room needs to be supplied. Just mostly floors one and two. And a little in the basement.
I can handle that.
But add to that I got backup to Fearless Leader in Damages.
Again, fine.
I was already doing that anyway at the home branch. There is about double the amount of items to worry about from there to here, but it's still the same process. Mostly. Except here we can just run down to the basement to TPD and retrieve a part that was missing instead of sending it over through delivery and wait for it to be processed.
Whatever, those are cake compared to this next one.
Okay, how do I explain this really without the nervous ramblings. I'll save those for later.
Pretty much the Young Adult Librarian for the work branch. Except without the title.
They gave me the Young Adult Section and TAB.
aka Teen Advisory Board.
Which is filled with teenagers.
Who plan events.
Like a prom.
At the library.
Yes, a prom.
At the library.
No pressure.
Can I just say how much I'm loving having a mentor on this one? She's fantastic! Youth librarian and has been doing this for years, and although I'm sure she'd love to dump it all on me, she's graciously sticking with me for a few months until I'm alright to take over.
Aaannd, along with all that goes with joining the Youth Services crew, aka getting the emails and going to the meetings.
Today was some prime real estate in that department. Never did I ever realize how important something such as a start date is.
Summer Reading Program.
Does it start the day after school ends, or do we wait until June 1st like always?
Kids come in the day after wanting to start.
Do we tell them to wait a week and come back on the 1st?
It's always been June 1st to July 31st.
Super easy to remember that way.
But do you really want to tell a kid to come back next week because we're not ready for them?
That was the debate today. It got heated enough to be interestingly humorous.
I sat back in awe.
I knew librarians were passionate and anti-stereotype, but this was a whole new experience there.
Apparently that's serious business.
And it is. I'm sure there will be more heated opinions when it's brought up again.
But there's time for that later. Today was pretty cool, getting to meet people involved in the whole process and listening to them promote picture books.
And "volunteering" (I use that word loosely as it was more like my mentor and Girlscout aka my two supervisors in this thing pointing to me when they asked for one) to help out with some stuff.
It was a cool changeup from the norm.
I'm looking forward to the challenge actually.
I don't want to shake things up though, things run pretty smoothly as they are.
I do, however, want to take stock of supplies and come up with some sort of spreadsheet of everything and where it's stored. Cause that would be a good thing to have. But I'll get to that later.
My current project is the YA area, aka going through and weeding older books because we're out of space. So I get to do that while I pull every book from the shelf, scan it and change the status, meanwhile watching the last checked out date and how many circ stats it has so I can weed properly.
That'll take me a few days purely because I'm still working at the desks and the lab through the day. I only get to work on those projects and assignments when I'm "off-desk" or scheduled to check-in in the back if there's nothing to check-in.
Gonna be a wild ride.
But like I said, I'm stoked for the challenge.
I think I can handle it.
I'm sure there will be some bumps in the road. A lot of freak out moments.
But I've got some great people to look up to in these areas so I'm not too worried.
At this moment anyway.
Ask me in about a month when things are in full swing.
So that was my day.
At work.
There was more after.
Headed out to Barnes and Noble to support Squirt and Bubby as they sang and played piano there. It was a fundraiser of sorts where part of the proceeds went to the school and all that. Kind of a cool deal. So I got a lot of Christmas shopping done.
Although I'm still clueless on a few people.
I'm gonna look for some more stuff tomorrow when I go grocery shopping.
Originally I was gonna go to the farm tonight but the roads suck again, and with my luck on the roads lately I'm putting nothing to chance in that category.
So, I'll sacrifice all that by sleeping in and watching some more Leverage. I'm caving and gonna start season three tonight.
Season two will get here, eventually.
Freakin' snow.
While some of us are living it up in Hawaii!!! Yeah, enjoy your beaches and drinks with the umbrellas in them. The rest of us will jam here in the snow. Just bring me back something nice.

i've posted the radio version of this multiple times, but i just found this one and loved it. there are two video videos of this song, one whose graphics will make you dizzy and the other in which they walk through places like a forest and the desert. and there's a lot of underwater camera work. and spinning. which i guess could make you dizzy as well. so i'll give you this one. it's a fantastic group, they're not american so you probably haven't heard of them. i find them delightful.
