What's with popcorn ceilings?

Like, how did they originate?

Did someone one day decide that their plain flat ceiling was boring and then had a random hose full of popcorn lying around?

Wow, wouldn't this look great up there?

Yeah, let's spray it on the ceiling! My ceiling would look so much cooler if I covered it in tiny bumps...

And then it was all like keeping up with the Joneses.

Gotta have a bumpy ceiling cause smooth ones are out of style.

Or was it more like meant for eclectic people who couldn't tell the difference between the ceiling and the walls so they had to give them different textures just to clarify.

Library Golf went fantastic, in case you were wondering.

I know that's why you're all actually here, not to read my ceiling ramblings.



9 holes set up throughout the library.

Two up on fourth floors, ride the broken/get stuck inside elevator down to second floor for one in biographies, music, nonfiction, language and then it's down the back stairway to the bottom of the stairway and over to the adult nonfiction and ending in youth services.

Each of the TAB kids designing and leading their own holes.

Squirt's was Doctor Who themed.

Even made her boyfriend come in and golf, it was amusing.

Rock solid awesome man.

Except that multiple of my members had to leave early so we had some fun staff/volunteer coverage.

Anyway, pictures are being put up on the website, I may steal some of them tomorrow with permission from Info-man who took them. I was too busy running all over four floors to take really any of my own.

Plus he was officially assigned those hours to take pictures so he got plenty.

I know you're all jealous that you didn't get to host a library golf tournament.

For the whole like 20 people who took part.

Not that I was expecting more, with our location I was glad there were any.

Think if we do it again we're gonna open it up to all ages. The only teens that show up to stuff at my branch are the teens already in the advisory board.

But they made me proud today.

Showed up at one, finished their holes, helped out the kids that came through...

Then the new intern and I got to clean it all up.

I'm loving this new intern, today we talked Chuck.

It's nice having someone there my age again.

We had fun, pushing around two flatbed trucks when our main elevator was busted.

The doors would get stuck and all that so instead of us riding in it with our flatbeds we stuck everything in it, sent it downstairs and then ran to meet it.

Highly entertaining.

Just not for the dude who came to fix it.

We were zonked by the end of the takedown you could tell, we were basically just chucking these magazine holders into a pile.

Calling it Queen of the Known Universe's land.

Filled with tiny little magazine people that worship her.

With their own newspaper.

Shocking.

Not really.

Those are our zonked out conversations.

So yes, I don't care that only 20 people participated, I would have called 5 a victory.

And even without those 5 my teens would have had fun.

And they did, designing their own holes, I know they were proud of them.

Alright, so that was the highlight of my day - aside from picking the clubs up this morning and dropping them off again.

And now doing homework.

Which is really more of a lowlight, I'm exhausted.

See, people make fun of me for buying those gimic protection plans for headphones, but they don't realize how many pairs of earbuds I go through in a month.

Today I took in 2 broken sets after work and got them both replaced for free, huzzah!

I love Best Buy.

Though the Geek Squad's customer service is loathsome.

Like, I know you have lines of people and you're busy, but perhaps if you picked up the pace a bit or focused on your own customer instead of your coworkers 4 other customers you would get things done a little bit faster and in a more organized manner.

Was second in line, stood there for half an hour before anyone talked to me.

Makes me proud of our customer service skills at my library.

Which a lady mentioned to my supervisor today. Said I was much more patient and helpful than a different branch and that she was going to start coming to us instead.

Rock solid man.


So today...

Was good.

Flew by fast.

Did my final Library Golf preparations for tomorrow, now all that's left is to pick up the clubs, set up the holes and hope for the best.

I'm hoping that a lot of teens show up to participate.

But not like too many that will be overcrowded and overdramatic.

Or ones that think it's dumb and make fun of our arrangements.

I guess we shall see.


Other highlights include more training and special guest star visits from an old professor and the Authentically Amazing One and Only KB.

Whom I haven't seen in like months but we need a girls night.

But I think Emperor's New Groove is probably the funniest just because of Kronk and David Spade.

I have no idea what his actual name is, I just call him Kronk when I see him.

I'm loving this whole one credit class thing. There are no due dates for the homework, it's all just "get it done by the last day of the semester" aka like the end of July.

Or maybe zombies like being terrifying, I've never really asked one.

Okay, so yes, this kind of crap has been my mindstate all day.

Like, okay, Summer Reading has officially began. I had 171 kids at the kickoff party, I didn't count the parents but I'd guess around 200 people total.

And that was all okay because even though Mentor wasn't there it went okay cause I had help. And now I can breathe again.

Except this morning my niece - and final TAB member - came in to work on her library golf hole - she's going with a Doctor Who theme, even made her own Tardis - and it hit me all at once that LIBRARY GOLF is this freakin' WEDNESDAY!

I just feel unprepared.

Yes, I've arranged to pick up the clubs that morning from the local mini-golf and take them back that night.

Yes, I have plenty of golf balls.

Yes, the posters are up and done.

Yes, appropriate signage is in the works.

Yes, the scorecards are made and printed.

Yes, all of the kids are ready with their holes.

So basically everything I need to do in preparation is done.

But there was no pre-registration so I don't know if I should expect 10 teens or 100 teens.

Cause you can't do pre-registration for teens cause it discourages them from attending.

Or they just ignore it and show up anyway.

I'm just freaked and trying not to be freaked.

Plus one of my kids can't make it so my senior TAB member is covering two holes...on two different floors.

INTERNS!!

I love having these guys around, they keep my sanity in place.

Most days.

Carter keeps looking at the wall behind me and I keep turning around expecting to see that bug again.

I know I pissed it off when I attempted to smash it.

If I show up at the library tomorrow covered in bites you'll know why.

Anyway, before all the attempted bug smashing but after the Library Golf freakage came homework.

And The Voice.

It's my first official day for Summer Semester. I'm in two classes but only one of them is showing up on Blackboard.

Had to panic to the Library Goddess on that one.

The one that's working already has its first Discussion Board up. It's for Library Information Systems. It should be a fun class and useful for everyday Koha experiences, however the textbook was published in 2002... so it's a bit out of date.

And the only reason we're using it is cause the professor wrote it.

I have a feeling I'm going to be relying on a lot of outside sources for this one.

But I read the first two chapters and did all the DB stuff. He doesn't have any number requirements but I'm setting a goal to post one to each DB and then reply to two others each time.

Cause that sounds about normal, depending on the topic.

Considering the only things I know about library systems are what I learned from Info Tech that I took a few semesters ago - and whose teacher is now my Assistant Director.

Plus, you know, working with one every day.

But whatever.

That's Koha, there are many others out there.

I'm sorry, the majority of you reading this have no idea what I'm talking about because you're not library personnel so I shall shut up on that topic.

I think it's gonna come down to Sasha, Michelle, Amber and Danielle.

Sasha deserves to win it. She is fantastic.

Danielle will probably win because of iTunes, but she is great.

Amber is another underdog cause it was only a one-chair turn, though Blake would have if he could have. And that she's the last woman standing after being paired up with Judith, Sarah and Caroline really gives her cred.

But Michelle would be the ultimate win, seriously.

Seriously, they're all in my top 20 so I'm cheering for them all, and Holly as well, but I will be legitimately pissed if the Swons Brothers win it.

Speaking of how things work, Sundays are super slow at the library.

Had some time to work on my booklist - Classics with a Twist - Pride Prejudice and Zombies, Sense Sensibility and Sea Monsters, Android Karenina, etc.

Been in the works for over a year cause it keeps getting back-burnered.

Am going to try to get it out before Summer Reading.

Cause that's when all hell breaks loose if you're involved in Youth Services.

Which I am cause I'm in charge of TAB.

Speaking of TAB, meeting on Tuesday, gonna have to draw up the agenda tomorrow and send out reminder emails. Basically we're going to be making up mock library golf setups so we'll know what we're doing on the actual day.

Excited.

As are staff, people are actually volunteering to help out - Infoman with pictures, branch manager from a different branch helping lead, Girlscout jokingly offered to caddy.

People are excited, I'm excited, it's gonna be awesome.

Even if it's just my teens that show up we'll have fun.

I have no real highlights for today.

It was super slow, I think I got like 15 stats the whole day.

Ate doritos for lunch, read more of Silver Linings Playbook, went grocery shopping after.

Did some dishes and some laundry, bought the new Pistol Annies CD.

Now it's on to The Proposal.

Hi!

So today was good. Very busy. Had 3/4 of the afternoon off desk and I still feel like I'm behind on Summer Reading stuff.

Finally got our dates nailed down for our Teen Summer Reading Events.

This year my teens are going with:
Jar Decorating - basically you put tape and stickers on a jar and then you paint the whole thing and peel the tape/stickers off to reveal the design to go with the "Beneath the Surface" theme and then also we're making paper lanterns with the jars so we have super thin paper that you draw on and then tape it around the jar, put a light in the jar and it makes a sweet nightlight.
Homemade Book Board Games - so the teens bring their favorite book to the library and we'll help them make a board game about it. So like with the Hunger Games they could do a Monopoly setup with the Capitol as Boardwalk. I did this in college with Pride and Prejudice - "Marry Mr. Collins, lose next turn" "Punch Miss Bingley in the face, move ahead three spaces" etc. - But we'll get them set up with templates for boards and then teach them how to make game pieces and all that.
Library Golf - this is the big one and it's the first event because that's the best time of year for my TAB kids to be able to help out. So we'll be starting off with a bang. As for logistics we will start on 4th floor with a couple of holes up there, ride the elevator down to 2nd (passed admin), around the nonfiction and music sections, down the back stairs and then through adult fiction and youth services.

I'm hoping the golf is especially popular just because of all the work that will go into it by the teens. Designing the holes and all that. I've been getting tips from a friend of Infoman's - things like using old mousepads to tee off of or using real golf balls instead of pingpong balls because they're easier to aim, etc.

The funny thing about the whole thing is that the mock booklets for Teen Summer Reading were sent out to the Teen Experience crew (which is basically the TAB leaders and some supervisors) to make sure the descriptions were spelled correctly and like 5 minutes after they were sent I got an email from one of the branch managers asking if she could help out with the golf.

This is after Girlscout asked if she could caddie.

And our Boss's Boss's Boss's Assistant gave me her stamp of approval today as well.

So if the teens are half as interested as the library employees are then we should be good.

I'm stoked.

I told her the more supervisors I can have on board the better as I'm still getting some apprehensive vibes.

We'll see how it goes and if it's awful then we'll learn from that and move on.

So that was the majority of my day, I finished the signs for the events - minus the kickoff party - and came up with supply lists. Anyone know where I can get 9 putters for like 3 hours on a June Wednesday afternoon?

There's a lot of golfers on staff maybe I can borrow them.

Anyway, so that was work. After work I met up with the boyfriend. We took some pictures around the train station - one of his favorite hobbies. He focused on the trains while I went more for the signs.

But that means I'll get hooked and not sleep and then tomorrow I'll be miserable.

I kept thinking today was Thursday.

Like this morning I went downstairs expecting a staff meeting, nope that's tomorrow morning.

Just started off the day on a weird note.

Didn't help that I was freaked all day because of the interview tonight.

For Diversity in Libraries class we have to interview a librarian of color but they have to be from this selected list so the one I chose works in Seattle. Anyway, we set up a time and I had all my questions ready but I was still freaked the whole day.

But she was great, had a lot to say and all that.

Immediately after I wrote up the transcript - we have to submit that plus an overview them comment on others, however it's not due 'til the like 24th.

So I'm way early on this one.

Same with last night's, it's not due until Friday but I knew I wouldn't have time to do it later so I got it done then.

Even if I did go insane sitting in the same position and staring at the same screen for three hours.

Gotta learn how to take breaks.

But see when I take a break then I'm not motivated to start again so I just don't.

Anyway, I'm glad to have them done. Today at work was pretty good. Aside from the think it's Thursday keep opening the wrong schedule thing.

Figured out my Library Golf logistics. I'm thinking 9 holes will be enough. That way I'll have enough TAB kids to each cover a hole and circulate.
If I put two up on fourth floor, then they hit it in the elevator to ride down to second.
Then we'll put one in the biographies,
One in music,
One in nonfiction,
One in YA/Language,
One at the bottom of the stairs - we'll hit it from second and end at the base of first,
One in adult fiction and then
One in youth services to end it.

That's nine right?

They're good kids, they want to do more like fundraising stuff, however we're not allowed to fund raise on library property - which I only know because of the food drive. Remember last summer where my partner and I set up that build-something-with-the-food-donated competition? The wording had to be approved on the posters so that it made it sound like we weren't asking them for food, but asking them to help their favorite branch win the competition. It was ridiculous.

Holy crap, you're not gonna believe it. For the second time in posting history it is literally 11:50.

So I don't even have to fake it like every other one just so it fits the right day.

Fair warning this post will most likely last 5 minutes maximum.

It's only 11 and I've already fallen asleep twice.

Apparently getting only 3 hours of sleep is bad for your body, and can only last so long even if you did manage to cover that during the day with 3 cups of coffee and a mountain dew.

But today was worth it, there were multiple jump-up-in-the-air-and-fist-pump moments.

Starting this morning with a kickass meeting with the Library Goddess. The both of us losing our voices - but mine is always like that pre-8AM. I was waiting to get crap for it but as hers was gone too it was more amusing than anything else.

Remember that rebuttal email that I wrote last night that took me like an hour? It was worth it. Seriously. It's not to have supervisors excited about your ideas, so excited in fact that they stand up for them. So it's looking good for library golf, but the process is still in the early planning stages. A lot can change, though as long as we're not restricted to the 4th floor I'll be happy.

I still suck at Scratched vs. More Scratched, BossLady dominated again.

Oh and we had our Thursday Afternoon Meeting today for youth services talking about some Summer Readin specifics and the like. That's where the title came from, there's always some interest snacks involved with that group.

I'm back to Lie To Me. But I'm off tomorrow so I'm thinking I'll throw in People Like Us and crash yet again soon.

Excited for a day off tomorrow, sleeping in, have nothing but a meeting in the afternoon and then dinner with the boyfriend's family after. Stoked for some great Mexican food. Best leftovers ever.

I did manage to find something for the boyfriend for Valentine's Day, however I can't post about it but I will keep you posted as it goes.

I'm really not good at all that stuff - Valentine's Day has never been my strong point cause I've never really been excited about celebrating it.

Granted my reason was always something to the effect that I didn't have anyone worthy that I would like to celebrate it with. Which is obviously changed so now I kind of look forward to it.

But the present is cool so I hope he likes it.

We found this coin looking this that isn't actually a coin, more like a weight of some kind, but we were bored so we started playing heads or tails but as it was blank and didn't have a heads or tails we labeled the sides as Scratched and More Scratched.

That was the entertainment of the day, the rest was just nervewracking.

Superwoman finally approved my plan for library golf, woohoo!

Anyway, so I sent out a mass email today about my idea about library golf and how it would work. I always get nervous when I send out anything that's a mass email, takes me like an hour to get the wording right. I was all excited to get it out in writing, but the responses that I got - from people I hadn't already talked to cause all the people I had already talked to were for it completely - suggested I contain it to the 4th floor.

But if you restrict us to the 4th floor it kills the whole activity because it would be just like mini-golfing anywhere else. The ability to use the stacks as obstacles or design holes to match the areas in which they're located makes it unique.

Their point was about liability, but really if it's limited to 6th-12th graders they're smart enough to not swing for the fences - or whatever the golf equivalent is for that term - but you know what I mean, they're not going to intentionally hit it into foot traffic.

And the holes would be blocked off anyway, with tape and books blocking the possibility of anything rolling out to where people would trip over them.

And if something is needed from the area then the game will pause until the item is retrieved.

I'm just trying to show teens that we're more than just our collection. That we actually want them to visit the library and have fun at the library so that they'll come visit us in the future.

Superwoman did officially approve it though and when I talked to the other supervisors previously - Cabin Fever and the rest of my new fun librarian friends - they were all for it. But I guess we'll see how it goes tomorrow.

What else from today?

The boyfriend is sick so our plans for the week have been postponed. Aside from that I talked to Sketch for a while and that was basically my day.

And still I find myself watching Lie To Me even with that list of movies that came in yesterday. Just met his ex-wife, played by Jennifer Beals. First off let me say I don't know who Rhonda from North Carolina is or if she is, in fact, the skanky whore you claim her to be, but how the heck did you get to my blog by typing that into Google?

It's making me re-evaluate my postings.

Okay, got that off my chest. We're good.

Today I was totally proactive.

I was so proactive I kicked proactive's ass.

Ninja of awesome, I'm telling you.

I'm still just in this sort of giddy shock mode that my ideas are actually being considered for stuff.

Usually when I suggest things they get shot down immediately so it came as a surprise to me today in our "teen experience" meeting (with my newest awesome library friends go here) that the two big ideas that I threw out in front of seasoned veterans actually got approved.

But the problem with having the ideas and them being accepted by your supervisors is that you become in charge of said ideas and have to put them into action. 

Which is fine. 

While I'm used to sitting back and watching the action in front of me, not stepping up when I should because I don't like conflict, I've decided it's time for a change.

I'm being proactive. 

That's what the Library Goddess is always preaching about in classes so I'm taking a stand for my teens cause I think they're important and if I don't stand up for them who else will?

They're my responsibility and I want to make things worth their time. 

Anyway, the meeting this afternoon was about Summer Reading Events, Teen Tech Week, some lunch time school visits, and the fact that chocolate cupcakes are awesome. 

Okay, that was mostly a side note. 

They talked about their ideas for Summer Reading which is when I dropped the bomb about library golf. 

See, I'm thinking this could be epic. Set up a few holes on 4th, hit the ball into the elevator and ride with it down to 2nd, go through the biographies, around the music library, through the nonfiction stacks, passed YA and the language area, down the stairs, through adult fiction and ending in youth services. 

I'll put my TAB kids in charge of the holes - giving them a chance to design and build their own to match with the area it's located in. For instance, while going passed the travel section we could build an Eiffel Tower out of the books to hit it through. 

I'm thinking it will be more like croquet than golf cause we'll be hitting it through something and not into a hole. 

We can add books about oceans for a water hazard and books on the desert for a sand trap. 

Anyway, they loved it. As does BossLady, it's SuperWoman that's still apprehensive but I'm on it. So is one of my supervisors from the meeting too apparently she saw SuperWoman in the parking lot and yelled something about wanting golf at the library before driving away. 

It's on. 

EPIC!

See, I think it could be epic and I think the kids will be excited about constructing the holes. 

But we'd keep it 6th-12th grade for participants as it would be for the Teen Summer Reading program. Anything younger and things could get out of control. 

And we'd use wiffle balls.

No idea how to spell that. I'd Google it but I can't move my arms. Carter is laying on them so all I can reach is the immediate keyboard. Not even the mouse pad. 

HA! 

Snuck my arm out to take the picture but now I can't put it back so I have one arm under him and the other over him. 

This isn't going to work. 

Oh, now he's mad and sulking in the corner of the couch cause I made him move. 

I'll pay for that later. 

Where was I?

Oh, it's apparently spelled "wiffle" which was my first guess but it's still giving me the red lines underneath it which constantly question my sanity. 

Here is someone's interpretation of library golf in case you're interested - though ours will look much different cause my kids are more creative. 

Anyway, so that was one idea for summer reading, another possible is to make masks but I haven't decided on the types yet. Our theme is "Beneath the Surface" though one of my supervisors basically said "screw the theme and go with whatever" which I was glad about cause I had no idea how to tie golf to digging except that golf has holes but we weren't hitting things into holes, anyway, so yes masks and I found these SWEET STORM TROOPER MASKS that you can make our of milkjugs. You gotta check them out, go here 

I have a feeling I'll be buying a lot of empty milkjugs. Too bad I won't have Fearless Leader around to remind me with the *invisible milkjug dance*

The first year she and I were in charge of the Food Drive we did this change collecting thing in milkjugs and she planned to buy the empty ones after work if she didn't forget so I did this weird invisible milkjug dance thing - don't ask me to repeat it I don't remember how it went - and then texted her after work *invisible milkjug dance* *invisible milkjug dance* and it worked cause she remembered them. 

Anyway, the second big idea that they approved was for Teen Tech Week. I was thinking it'd be fun to do like a "check in @ your library" cause ALA is big on anything that includes the phrase "@ your library" in fact I'm pretty sure they have that phrase under copyright but anyway, they'd have a week to go around to all the branches and check in on Facebook/talk to a staff member who puts a temporary note on their record/initials a score sheet (this part is still a work in progress) and then whoever visits them all by the end of the week gets a candy bar. 

Alright, I should crash. On to the music.

Meet Delayed...Reaction. For those of you who don't already know us. 

Actually I'm pretty sure the *invisible milkjug dance* looked a bit like that. 

Anyway, we write songs at camp and then record them. 

Our original recording was better - we were physically at camp - and I have it somewhere but not sure where that somewhere is. 

But I'll upload it when I find it later. 

I'm sure when I'm not looking for it it'll turn up as things usually do. 

But that was a few years back. We haven't written one for a couple years. 

Now that he's all married and I'm pretty sure his wife hates me. 

Not that I can blame her, but that's a long story. 

Anyway, so today rocked because of a single meeting and I was reminded why I'm in this profession. 

Which is ironic because just last week I was questioning that very fact. 

But that's an even longer story. 

Like I said, taking a stand cause that's what the Library Goddess would tell me to do. 

If only it wouldn't have snowed then I'd have gotten to see the boyfriend tonight as was originally planned cause the rest of this week is crazy busy. Touring libraries tomorrow and the next day and then TRIVIA NIGHT on Friday. I'm stoked. 

And I have Donna clothes. 

Did I mention that last night? I don't remember if I did or not. But I found Donna clothes. Oldest Sister will be thrilled as she's the one that bought them for me in the first place, though I don't think that's what she had in mind at the time. 

I really need to quit rambling and sleep. I started this entry like an hour and a half ago. To be fair I did have a giant cat blocking half my keyboard.

Okay so, with the help of Info-Man and BossLady we've come up with an idea that could be completely EPIC for teens at the library.

See, he has this library friend who convinced her library people to hold like a golf @ your library thing where they set up holes around the stacks.

Which reminded me of this video that I had watched a while ago...

Anyway, so I was thinking it would be fun for my TAB kids to do this around our library as an event for them, but then thought maybe we could make it a system-wide TAB thing where all of the different branches TAB kids could take part but then thought that would really limit our audience as well, so what about making it a Teen Summer Reading Program Event in which outsiders can partake?

The theme is "Dig Into Reading" and we're thinking more of golf than croquet, but either way I'm sure we could think up some sort of slogan to fit.

But the hosting teens could each design their own hole to match with what area of the library it's located in.

I'm thinking we could start up on 4th floor and have a couple holes, then they hit it in the elevator - don't worry they'd be those plastic golf balls, not the real ones that break glass - ride with it down to 2nd floor - skipping admin on 3rd cause pretty sure they wouldn't be fans - go through the biographies, the music library, around the reference collection and computer lab, then through the non-fiction and young adult areas, even some by the language and car repair manuals, taking them to the north staircase where they would hit it down the stairs and then going through the adult fiction and ending in the youth services department. 

All the while hitting their plastic golf ball into themed holes along the way.

Thoughts?

I had to ask my aides cause they always tell me if things are lame or not.

They're like my handy dandy lame-o-meter.

But they said it sounded cool.

I think it could be EPIC. Which is why I want to open it up to more than just my teens cause for that sort of thing it would be better to have a crowd.

But I need permission from so many levels first before I could even bring it up to my teens as a possibility.

And I have a meeting on Tuesday so I'm hoping it will spark and catch fire tomorrow and give me either a yes or no by 4:15 on Tuesday.

But we'll see, I'll keep you posted.

nah, these guys are actually pretty good.

It made for an interesting Sunday. One of the joys of having an ipad is that you can take it to work with you so you can add and drop classes with it on your breaks.

So, I emailed the Library Goddess last night cause I was freaking out about the classes I was going to take this semester. Special Libraries is gonna be awesome, there's no way I'm switching that one. I'm pumped and it's more of a go places than a read about places kind of thing.

Internet Reference I think is going to be very relevant and helpful and manageable, however when I heard that we needed to read 2 novel length books every week of the semester (aka January-May) for Reader's Advisory and combining that with the 2 other classes and their homework, plus work work, plus upcoming camp work, plus Summer Reading stuff, there was going to be no way that my brain would still be in one place by the end of the semester.

So I switched over to Diversity in Libraries which is taught by the same two professors that taught my Adult Services class last semester which I'm actually really nerdily - yes, nerdily - excited for because I learned A LOT about adult programming in that class by writing up program plans and researching all that. I took a lot away from that class and at the work branch our patron-base is completely diverse.

Not that the other branches don't have diverse patrons, but because of our location we have a bit more...

Anyway, I just think that that specific topic can really be helpful for my daily life at the work branch and may also teach me things that I can do with my TAB kids to kind of get them more involved with library outreach...
