"you want some Smooth Move?"

So today rocked.

Slept in, went in at 12, worked basically upstairs the whole day.

Mom brought food keeping her reputation as favorite staff mom.

Was super swamped the whole day, but did get some time to write reviews for SLP the book and movie, and then Argo the movie.

Woohoo, speaking of, Bradley Cooper just won the MTV award for best male performance.

Sorry, watching the awards show I recorded cause I haven't had a chance to.

Love Rebel Wilson.

Anyway, we just got these installed at work this week.

Photo: new vending machines at work

They're awesome.

Even have sensors that can tell if your food gets stuck in the machine.

After work came home - Smo is staying over cause she has class in the morning.

I got to give her her birthday present - aka Pirate's Booty and some laxative tea called "Smooth Move". cause she used to say "Smooth move, Ex-Lax".

Photo: Carter hoarding the laxative tea... with Suzi Ortmeier

Carter hoarded the box, before he got addicted to fishing here:

old, but i'm not that old. young, but i'm not that bold.

Aw, Shamy.

I love Big Bang Theory.

And Amy Farrah Fowler.

She makes me laugh.

She's still in the Penny is weird phase. I'm trying to figure out what changes her mind into labeling Penny as her "bestie".

Can't remember, been a while since I've watched. I haven't seen anything from this season at all. Is Wolowitz still up in space?

I should really look into that.

Today was crazy.

9-1 with volunteers at the library. We cleaned all the computers and dusted first floor and half of second.

After which I helped out at the desk, and headed out to G-Town for the camp meeting.

This year's theme is "Back to the Scripture" - a play on Back to the Future.

We do a lot of "play on" themes. There was Fear Can Never Factor In, Mission Possible, Extreme Makeover: God's Edition, Survivor In Christ, and last year's Be Transformed. Plus various others.

Stoked for this year.

Gonna have some fun skits to go with the theme.

Though I'll be sticking with the HeeHaw stuff for the older ones.

Gonna have to dig up some more verses.

So nice doing those in the air conditioning.

Definitely makes a difference, plus this year they're giving us a flat rate so we're saving like 1500 bucks.

Double bonus.

And I got the software for the website so gonna have to brush up on my HTML.

I've been put in charge cause I'm the only one of us who knows HTML.

Should be interesting.

Have a feeling I'm gonna go flailing to Boss's Boss's Boss's Assistant, aka my ex-professor who taught it to me last semester.

Aw man, it's storming again.

Carter is not pleased.

Don't think he's a fan of thunderstorms.

Not that I blame him.

It's been super stormy here in Nebraska.

Granted not as severe as other parts of the US, but like every other day there's some sort of weather warning.

Today was up in the 60's which is probably why it's storming out.

Where was I?

Oh yeah, camp.

So yes, went over notes from last year, updated the application forms, added some promotional stuff on Facebook, am excited to do the website, but a bit nervous.

I'm sure I'll ramble more about that later.

We'll meet up again in May to send out forms.

There was a good number of teen helpers there last year, and we actually divided them up into two groups - well, the ones we didn't stick in cabins - but the rest did games one day and then kitchen the next so that they both got to work in the air conditioning at some point.

And we're sticking with that cause it seemed to go over well.

Gonna be short on lifeguards this year, should be interesting. I'm hoping that Megz can make it at least one day. If not we're gonna be royally screwed.

Trying to brainstorm ideas for time fillers if we can't take them tubing.

They love it but we can't go if the water is too high or too low.

We used to do counselor hunts instead, where basically the counselors would hide and their campers would have to find them.

I remember once our counselors wore camo and hid up in the trees.

Like up up in the trees. Took us forever to find them.

Someone once buried themselves in sand.

That couldn't have been comfortable.

Though my favorite was when a certain someone hid on top of the old cafeteria and then fell through the roof.

Don't look at me like that, it wasn't me.

Still funny though.

The new building is too high to climb on.

Sad day.

One year we had them do extra crafts but that was expensive.

Maybe a scavenger hunt would be good, but then we'd have to come up with one involved enough that it would take up a whole afternoon.

It takes like 4 hours for all the tubing festivities cause we leave at 1 and then usually don't get back until like 4 and cleaned up by 5. And then it's time for the younger kids to eat already.

So there's a lot of time to cover.

Ideas?

Anyway, I love our core group and the Music Mentor was able to make it, along with Scuba Steve, Blackstone and Obi-Wan. We had our usual icecream and joked around a bit.

After the meeting I headed out to the farm to jam with the parentals.

Who then ditched me for supper - joking, I left anyway.

But it's going to be their 48th anniversary so they're celebrating.

Didn't realize it had been that long.

Didn't remember my sister was that old.

Don't tell her that, I'd get smacked.

No, she's not old. Cause that would mean 17 years from now I'll be old and that ain't happening.

Actually I feel old now. Especially today after working with all those college kids. But I had Superwoman there to help me wrangle them.

I'm zonked.

The boyfriend is stuck in Sacramento. The train that's supposed to be there like now is delayed cause it derailed. No idea when they'll get out of there. Bummed for him cause they made big plans for tomorrow in Seattle. Hoping it doesn't take too long.

Alright, gonna watch some more Big Bang and crash at some point soon.

Back to work tomorrow.

Song of the Day:

Counting Stars - OneRepublic

love it.

cause somewhere in the crowd there's you...

I was totally productive today.

Even on my day off.

You'd be proud.

Picked up the boyfriend's car from the train station - Oldest Sister drove me and gave me a cookie for breakfast.

Set up a dentist's appointment for May - you know how much I hate those with my history.

But so far, not famous at this office.

At least not to my knowledge.

So that's something.

Go here: Famous @ the Dentist Office

Got Arby's for lunch.

Took a nap.

Okay, so I wasn't totally productive.

Watched like 3 discs of SVU season 13?

I think?

I don't know I've gotten them all through ILL but I've had this one requested since October. So it's whatever the latest season on DVD is.

Ya, 13.

I figured I'd hate it cause it doesn't have Stabler, but the new ones aren't so bad.

I would, however, protest if Benson quit.

Munch isn't in it as much. Did you know Richard Belzer's played that character in like 4 TV series?

Wow, more than four if you count cameo's.... John Munch on IMDB

Anyway, after my nap and SVU break I did a ton of homework.

Mostly for Diversity in Libraries.

Frustrating as it was.

We're in groups of 4 and we each had to come up with 5 African-American books, which we did last week, but today we had to look them up in these specific library catalogs to see if they own them - I had NY and Springfield - however in my libraries, unlike the others, they catalog the editions separately (which technically you're supposed to do because people look for certain editions of things) so I had to look in like 3 places and add everything together while everyone else had like 1 place and that's it.

Anyway, she didn't say if we were supposed to add up each edition or just do the 1 edition our group member picked or if we were supposed to add in the different formats and all that, just blah.

Whatever, it's done. And I'm content with it.

I think.

I'm content that it's done.

Let's go with that.

Now it's back to SVU.

I would do more homework but I'll actually have time to do that during the week since the boyfriend is in Seattle.

Next homework assignment is due on the 20th for Internet Reference, and then like the 9th or 10th of May for the final assignment. In Diversity next week we're discussion boarding - can I use that as a verb? - about this collection assignment and then we present our posters. I did mine on Diversity in Young Adult Programming.

But I have no idea how to present that on Blackboard Collaborate so I'll have to figure that out at some point. But that's the final for Diversity.

And then I'll be done until June when I take Foundations - 1 credit class I can finish in a day - and Library Systems which only lasts through June.

So I'll be free for camp, huzzah!

Speaking of camp, huzzah! We have our first meeting of 2013 tomorrow so I'll be headed out to G-Town after work.

Tomorrow's gonna be interesting because I have volunteers coming in from 9-1, then I'm off and headed to the meeting which is at 2:30, then I'm stopping by the farm because they're burning ground - which I'm sad I can't make it to cause I'm working instead.

Think I mentioned this, my siblings and I own land and are burning it to the ground to start over. We did that when we first got it too. The boys enjoyed smacking the fire with big flopper sticks and riding around it on four wheelers.

And I think there was beer and snacks involved at some point.

Can you say "redneck"?

Anyway, I'm bummed, but I can't exactly miss work cause they're my volunteers.

Well, they're UNL volunteers, but I'm in charge of them for the morning. They're going to be cleaning the computer lab - cause that gets done never - wiping down tables and chairs on 4th floor - cause that gets done never - dusting the reference shelves - cause that gets done never - and then whatever else my coworkers suggest that also never gets done.

Theme sensed?

Yeah.

So that'll be an interesting morning, and then I'm pumped for the camp meeting. It'll be the core group most likely aka myself, Obi-Wan, the Music Mentor (i'm hoping anyway), Pastor Blackstone, and Scuba Steve O, and maybe Josh.

One of these things is not like the other, I know.

But Josh actually is a nickname.

I think Obi-Wan and I are the only ones who call him Josh, everyone else calls him Pastor.

But he's not our Pastor so it's allowed.

I just remember showing up at teen camp after Obi and I went grocery shopping and he was there and I was like, "hey josh!" and he was like "FINALLY someone who doesn't call me Pastor!"

I'm stoked for camp already. Application sheets were made and will be approved at the meeting along with the budget, theme, menu and all that. If our Head Chef can make it that is.

Anyway, I should stop talking about camp now because you know if you get me started it's never ending so I'm going to put the computer down and back away slowly...

after these anyway:

i'm thinking soundtracks...

Super Trouper - Donna & the Dynamos

love 2:34-2:35's "look, look, look"

didn't realize how many abba songs i actually knew until i watched this movie and went, "but they didn't sing that or that..."

i blame my father.

We Built This City/We're Not Gonna Take It - Rock of Ages

i know you're supposed to root for the rockers but i like Catherine Zeta-Jones so much more than Russell Brand.

it was hysterical at like 0:51 the boyfriend's like "oh my god, that's Sebastian Bach!" to which i replied "oh my god, how do you know Sebastian Bach?!" so now i love him even more.

and that's i got for today.

i know, another pre-midnight post. holy crap tag in use.

Special Librarians Dominate Dewey by Cataloging for Their Customers Instead of Other Librarians.

One class down!!

Had our final session tonight, had to give final presentations. They divided up the grad students into different rooms and then undergrads critiqued us.

I was freaked basically the whole day about it.

Recorded it last night and listened to it on repeat all day today.

but here it is, as requested.

Title: Creativity and Collection Management in Special Libraries

Thesis: Special Librarians Dominate Dewey by Cataloging for Their Customers Instead of Other Librarians.

Let me start this off by saying, I have nothing against Dewey. I think it’s a great organizational system that has been constantly evolving through time and that’s why we still use it.

However, Dewey is not customer friendly, it’s overwhelming.

You’ve got baby name books shelved in the middle of the geography and history section.

You’ve got mythology lodged between law and political science.

Without the help of a catalog even veteran librarians sometimes have trouble finding items.

But Librarians are innovators man.

We rise above.

We take the improbable and make it possible.

We are all that and a bag of potato chips.

But there’s something to be said even more for special librarians. As a public librarian – well, a Library Service Associate – I enjoy the variety of material and patrons  that I get to work with on a daily basis. But in a special library it’s very different. Each special library has a specific patron base they focus on. They choose their collection based on the needs of that patron base, not based on what other librarians say they should have in their collections.

1.            Special Librarians Focus Their Collection Development on Their Patrons’ Needs

Part of being a special librarian is getting to know the needs of the patron base that they are serving. They must ask themselves what titles they should add, and what titles they should avoid. One of the Special Librarian Competencies that I read about dealt with this subject. It states that a special librarian must have “expert knowledge of the content of information resources, including the ability to critically evaluate and filter them.” They do this by being aware of relevant material to their specific patron base. While many are open to the public, they’re not based on the public’s needs. Lisa Kelly at the Library Commission said it perfectly – “if the public library has it, we don’t,” because they’re a librarian’s library.

At each of the libraries I visited I asked if there were specific criteria an item had to meet before it was added to the collection and the answer was always the same. They focused their collections based on what their patrons would find the most useful, and if an item didn’t fit that category then it wasn’t added.
What was really interesting was that a lot of the librarians that I talked to had someone above them that could veto items in their collection, but they rarely did because they trusted the librarian’s opinion.

Let’s move on to Collection Maintenance.

2.            Special Librarians must constantly maintain their collection to stay relevant to their patron base.

According to its website the Law Library of Congress (2012) has a “collection of over 2.65 million volumes spanning the ages and covering virtually every jurisdiction in the world” (para. 1). Obviously, the special libraries we visited don’t have that kind of space.

Take Tom’s library at the Regional Center. It’s a one room library, filled with both nonfiction, fiction, plus magazines, and internet computers. Tom took over the job from a lady who kept everything. He said he worked with the Library Commission to weed down the collection.

At the Law Library they must have the most recent material because laws are constantly changing and you don’t want to give someone bad information. The problem with that is that updating is expensive. And according to Sandy Plazcek at the Law Library, 95% of their items don’t even check out.

Since expanding is often out of the question, a lot of the libraries have resulted in working in a consortium of sorts. The Law Library used to be able to purchase and keep all of the state statutes, but now divide it up so groups can make sure certain ones are current. The same is true for the State Library. They used to have all of the states’ statutes, but because of spacing issues now they exchange statutes with states if they need them.

But even though their spacing is limited, they still have their eyes out for their customers, by making sure if they don’t have a needed item there, they still have access to it.

Now there is also the option to go digital. This saves space and can broaden your patron base. In his article “The Future Is Boundless” Christopher Harris (2010) says, “Collections won't lose their bookish quality even if print volumes are replaced by ebooks. It's the same information, the same stories that we treasure, only in a new format. Our brains must be made to recognize this new interpretation: library = books, but books = ideas (not containers).”

The majority of the libraries I visited had websites. Some even with their own online resources like the Library Commission’s Books in Series database. Many had technology available in house with internet computers or databases, but none had completely digitized their collections.

So we’ve talked about collection development and maintenance, now we’ll move on to creativity in action. This section shows how much special librarians know their patrons.

3.            Special Librarians Have To Be Creative to Draw Attention to Their Collection

In the article “Issues Facing Academic Law Libraries - New Challenges, New Opportunities” Linda K. Fariss talks about the different challenges of working in an Academic Law Library. According to Fariss (2012), “Law libraries, like all types of libraries, are looking for ways to re-invent themselves” (p. 37). And that’s what libraries have to do these days to get peoples’ attentions. Special librarians, like all librarians, are focused on getting people to use their resources. They’re always coming up with ways to get people interested. But, with limited space and budgets they really have to be creative.

Some examples of creativity that I’ve run across throughout the semester include:

State Library – Secret passageways
-              Not only is the building historic, but it has secret passageways? That house secret books? Who can resist stopping by?

Law Library – Minigolf tournaments
-              The law librarians know that law students can use a break every once in a while, so they host an annual mini golf tournament in the library. An event like this not only provides fun for potential customers, but it’s also a way to show off their collection.

Regional Center – Wii for recreation
-              Tom got a Wii for recreational purposes and also added more “let’s get it going” material to his collection.

Library Commission – Talking Books
-              The Library Commission knows that there are readers out there who are disabled and can no longer read, so they’ve come up with a solution. Talking Books. They record anything from best sellers to magazines and mail them out for free.

State Penitentiary – Legal Aides
-              Sam’s library is divided into two sections, the legal library and the recreational library. Since most of the prisoners there do a lot of their own legal work Sam hires a few of them to be legal aides and assist the other inmates. This encourages inmates who don’t know the processes to come into the library and get help.

Synthesis:

So, let’s go back to my original thesis: Special librarians dominate Dewey and catalog for their customers instead of other librarians.

Let’s break that down.

Special Libraries Cataloging for Customers:

Special librarians could care less about what other librarians say they should have in their collection. While yes they may take their advice, it’s them that truly know the needs of their patrons. They know them because they have a passion for their job, their collection, and their patron base. Or they would work somewhere else.

Tom has a big self-help section at the Regional Center because that’s what his patrons like to read. While some people are worried about censorship and would be hesitant about including books on suicide at that particular library, Tom knows that his patrons can use it for research. He’s also able to work with the staff there to make sure that the books fit in with each individual’s treatment plans.

While some would be apprehensive about being a prison librarian, Sam loves it. If you were to ask someone on the street what material they thought would be in a prison library you would probably get a blank stare, and then a mentioning of legal documents. But Sam’s library is so much more than that. His material does have to be approved from his bosses, but he still includes items like the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy claiming “prisoners have the right to read bad fiction too.”

Special Libraries Dominating Dewey:

Special Librarians dominate Dewey by coming up with their own organizational systems, especially the smaller ones.

Let’s stick with Tom and Sam’s libraries.

Tom does use a form of Dewey, but he doesn’t divide up the youth and adult, shelving the Harry Potter novels by JK Rowling in the R section of the fiction. Most likely because of limited spacing issues, but also because he knows his patrons will find them there.

My personal favorite example and the basis for this entire presentation shows exactly how special librarians dominate Dewey by cataloging for their customers instead of librarians…Sam at the prison library, knows his inmates won’t read Romance, so he shelves Twilight and other paranormal romances in the Horror section.

Final Thought:

I focused this presentation on the collection management in special libraries, but special libraries are so much more than their collections. All of the librarians that I met this semester have so much passion for their jobs, but another common theme I ran across at every single library I visited was that they focus on the needs of their borrowers. And that’s why there’s something to be said about special librarians.

aaannd the feedback from the undergrads was good.

apparently i seemed confident and enthusiastic about material.

ohhh, "perfect voice and volume level" i think that's a compliment.

"great volume throughout presentation. understood you clearly."

"looked comfortable"

"good citations they were very supportive."

"very comfortable speaking in front of an audience" HA!

"thought you made very good points. they were all clear and abundantly supported. rock on."

oh, but i'm informal.

i'll take that in spades if i pass.

"strong speaking voice and eye contact backed up points"

"cool gestures" okay?

"passion"

"great use of humor. makes presentation memorable"

wow, this one's handwriting is even more atrocious than mine.

wasn't sure that's possible.

i think it says...."catchy, dewey must go" ummmm "yes know your customer's reads" no, needs, it's "needs" yes looks like "mia" no that's not right, is it nice? yeah, "nice" i think "just" no it's "job speaking as the expert on this topic. you did well including visits and librarians in your presentation"

yikes.

"engaging, conversational tone, lots of energy, talked a bit fast at times"

yeah, i get that a lot.

but if "informal" and "fast" are the worst they got I think I'm good to go.

Pending final posted grades that is. I'll keep you posted.

on to the music:

haven't heard this one in a while

All My Loving - The Beatles
lost count how many clips he pieced together, but it's cool.

all-in-all it was a good day. totally bizarre though as i was only at the work branch for three hours. one of which was a staff meeting, then i was off desk, then i was on desk, and then i was at lunch and off to a meeting before leaving at 3 for class.

after which i met up with the boyfriend since he's leaving tonight. he and his dad are going to seattle for a week and a half.

to pick up a motorcar that he bought.

see how nice of a girlfriend i am that i let him get away with that?

and say nothing?

but i'm sure he would have plenty to say about my weird hobbies.

or obsessions rather.

Women's Murder Club, Charlie's Angels, ancient Egypt, blogging, mis-matching my socks, Silver Lining's Playbook, chocolate, the list goes on.

anyway, the only things i said were to have fun, take pictures, and text me at least once a day.

cause i'm bossy like that.

"i'll be back to kill your spiders..."

intro for the speech i need to memorize for tomorrow:

have been finalizing speech all night. finished the powerpoint, now it's just about memorization. the most of which will probably take place tomorrow. i'm gonna record it and then listen to it over and over throughout the day. that's how i learned the zombies vs. unicorns speech here: Impromptu speech writing

you'll get the rest of this one tomorrow.

Quote of the day:
I have spiders, I think.
Anyway, the exterminator came to the apartment, but I kept calling him the "terminator" to which Info-man replied in a Schwarzenegger accent, "I'll be back to kill your spiders..."

yes, i know, short post, but like i mentioned, huge day tomorrow and gotta record my speech.

i did was Splash. glad Katherine made it through to another day. i've really been surprised by nicole eggert, but i'm still rooting for drake and rory. and have since the beginning, so stoked they're the top two. and then i added katherine on my root for list cause of last week's dive. and i like brandi because she was an alternate and came in an dominated.

i know, i know, it's an awful show. seriously awful, but it's a good relaxing show that takes me to a zen place.

moving on to music:

soooo much spanish this year!

last year it was julio and he was the first in the series, now it's everywhere!

Como la Flor - Mary Miranda

worth watching purely for shakira's reaction at 1:12.
"that's the real spicy dip!"
literally the only song i remember from Selena.

Good Girl - Amber Carrington

my team is full.
blake's ticked.

Dreams - Jacqui Sandell

it's like Juliet Simms-light. but she's good. and it's a good song.

out!

"do your hips lie?" "yeah, on one side when i'm sleeping."

i'm in shock.

finished my final project before midnight.

i know, you're shocked too.

just the citations to go, huzzah!

weight off my mind.

only 4 hours to put it all together.

only.

i'm hoping i'll get to see the boyfriend tomorrow so i knew i had to get it done tonight as it's due thursday.

had a tab meeting today.

made mockup crafts for the kickoff party in may.

should be fun.

had issues making a carrot hat.

basically roll 12x18 paper into a dunce cone to put on your head and then green streamers hang out.

but it wouldn't stay as a cone while on my head so i tried to roll it just in front of me and then it came out all awkward.

the kids thought it was amusing.

plus i gave them pop today so i was double entertaining.

and that was my day in a nutshell.

oh and i cleaned when i got home, vacuumed and swept and all that.

i know, i'm boring today.

in my defence i'm totally zonked from the final assignment. sadly i have more to work on for other classes also due this week.

however, after thursday i'll be done with this class. think it's my last in person class.

everything else is online.

i think.

should check.

alright, i'm out.

Gravity - Ryan Innes

adam after one word, love it.
"oh my god they're finally together!"

These Boots Are Made For Walking - Grace Askew

bluntry.
"and you had a lot of coffee this morning!"
check out that one-handed guitar.
voice inflections remind me of Raelynn's...
"i'm very excited!"

Marry You - Jessica Childress

love her dance moves.
that's right, be jealous your teams are already full.
"whaaaat?"

Monday, April 8, 2013

"I'm Usher and I approve this message."

This is all I have to say about today.

Two years later.

I know it's not exciting to you, but it is exciting to me.

And that's really all I have to say about today.

Mostly because I need to do the homework that I was going to do during the day, but then of course didn't because maintenance was here, but before that I got hooked on SVU, and then after maintenance was here - well, there was some overlap - came 2 hours of work. And then after work the boyfriend was here.

So I chose him over homework.

In my defense he is leaving for a week and a half.

Plus I like him more than homework.

Which I hope all sane people would say about their boyfriends.

Or they're really in trouble.

Anyway, so yes, curtains.

Then work.

Then the boyfriend and I watched The Voice.

In fact he was the one that brought up the show in the first place, so he is not allowed to blame it on me.

Not that he would.

Well, he probably would.

But whatever, I love him and The Voice.

And my curtains.

And going in to work for only 2 hours, so it was a good day.

On to the music, because I need to work!

I don't know if he likes to watch it with me though, cause I can tell in advance which singers aren't going to be picked by their attitudes and their timing on the show.

And I can usually guess the coach, only missed one tonight and even Usher was shocked about that one.

Tiny Dancer - Caroline Glaser

nice dimples blake.

U Got It Bad - Jeff Lewis

love shakira's last second turnaround.
big surprise on the coach pick there...

Not Ready To Make Nice - Sasha Allen

"do you see that?" i see that blake.
"i'm sensitive!"
style reminds me of Amanda Brown from last season. she'll go far.

so far i'm thinking adam has the strongest team with sasha, judith hill, sarah simmons and midas whale.

blake is a close second with christian porter, holly tucker and savannah berry.

shakira has spanish-galore on her team, the strongest being monique abbadie.

and then surprisingly, even though i'm not a big fan of usher (anymore anyway) he does have a pretty good team with jess kellner, ryan innes, jeff lewis and michelle chamuel.

out!

legitimate pre-midnight post, holy crap tag in use.

Sunday, April 7, 2013

My McDonald's is cooler than your McDonald's.

Sure, I had to wait for my Southwest Chicken Salad - order same every time - but they gave me free icecream and a coupon for free food.

So, take that.

Aside from that today sucked.

I mean, work was alright.

And I'm okay now.

But between work and now has been ridiculous.

So remember my whole curtains thing?

And how I have them.

And they've been laying on my foosball table for two years now?

So, Mom bought me a rod attached to brackets that extend out farther than the blinds.

And at a glance it looked like it was long enough across, so I called and asked if tomorrow maintenance could come and set it up.

Then, upon further inspection, the rod is about 4 inches too short.

So, in a panic, I run to Lowe's.

But see, I already have a rod, I just don't have brackets that extend far enough away from the wall, so I figured I could buy longer ones and they would work with the rod that I have.

Turns out that the rod is too big for the brackets.

Like the divot isn't wide enough for the pole to lay in.

So then I had to go back and get another rod.

Turns out the rod I bought - when I went back - didn't extend long enough either.

So I had to go back again.

This time I bought a longer one, that extends and it fits in the brackets.

So there was much rejoicing.

After there was an excessive amount of four letter variety.

I'm sure my neighbors were alarmed.

But it's done now.

And Oldest Sister and Squirt made an appearance in support.

I gave her her Doctor Who Where's Waldo book I had ordered for her.

It's pretty exciting.

Gotta keep up the favorite aunt status.

Anyway, I had all these plans that I was going to clean the apartment and then start some homework but since I'm was so frustrated I probably would have broken things or wrote nothing but angst I figured I'd take the night off and do it tomorrow.

Don't have to go in until 4, so from the time I'm up, the time I go to work - for 2 hours - and then after 'til the time I go to bed I have to write up the presentation for Thursday.

10 minute speech, I can ramblenation it.

The undergrads find me amusing.

Not sure why.

But they're grading us.

Sort of.

So I'll be informative and charming and fly through it.

After I like puke beforehand cause I hate public speaking.

Literally makes me nauseous and like shaking and all that.

Which is weird, cause I did drama in high school.

And I was in English major in college which meant a lot of presentations.

And now I work in public service.

But still, I hate it.

Just makes me nervous.

I don't remember what else I was going to talk about, let me scroll up.

Salad, curtains, Lowe's, family, grad school, oh right, work.

So yeah, work was alright, I guess.

Typical Sunday.

Except I was supposed to train 3 GoPo's today, but only 1 showed up.

Not my problem.

It's their responsibility to get their 20 hours of volunteering done by May. If they don't show up for a preapproved time, then it's on them to set up another, or find somewhere else to volunteer.

The one I had was fantastic.

Did some computer stuff, then ran a Lost in Transit list...

Which is basically a list of stuff that went missing during delivery from branch to branch.

Most things were improperly checked in.

Or never made it to delivery in the first place.

Either way they go on a list and we have awesome volunteers who run them.

Lost in Transit.

That was gonna be our band name at the home branch.

Pretty sure that's in here somewhere...oh yeah: Joe Studley and the Lost In Transit

He still hates that nickname.

Wow, when posts were short.

What happened to those days anyway?

Makes me want to look over my old stuff and figured out if that was a rare occurrence or when all this rambling was triggered.

I know, I know, at birth. Shutup.

Speaking of birth, Mom came in today.

Brought me my jacket.

That I left at the music mentor's benefit yesterday.

Funny story, so I left my jacket there, yeah, but see I always keep my wallet in my jacket pocket.

But for some weird reason that morning I took my wallet out of my jacket pocket and put it in my pants pocket instead.

Which I never do.

So someone was watching out for me, cause I wouldn't have gotten far without that.

What else from today?

Got to work with some cool people. Team Awesome was reunited for a few hours....Queen of the Known Universe won, ugh, in our stats competition. Think she beat me by like 3 points, but to be fair she did have like 30 minutes more public service than me cause I was training the GoPo. Who knows, I could have gotten 4 points in those 30 minutes and then I would've dominated.

I already owe people candybars cause stupid Louisville beat my Shockers.

Ugh.

Oh well, I figured Louisville will win it all after they beat Duke like they did. Injury and all.

But Wordie is all for Michigan so we'll see how that goes.

Alright, and that was my day, so let's skip to the music so I can crash.

Hoping maintenance doesn't get here at 8AM tomorrow.

Setting my alarm for 9.

Now watch, they won't get here 'til 2.

Hurt So Good - Carly Rae Jepsen

i know, i know, but it's catchy. not as catchy as call me maybe, but close.

Saturday, April 6, 2013

"I hate trees." "They don't bother me." "You weren't in the last one!"

I know, I know, I skipped yesterday.

But you probably enjoyed the vacation.

We went to see Jurassic Park in 3D - cause I had never and apparently that's a crime against humanity - and was way passed midnight by the time I got back.

Was awesome in 3D, Scale of Awesome says 8/10. Dinosaurs seemed pretty realistic. The boyfriend says this is before the computer animated era so they were all robots.

Anyway, here are a few of my favorite quotes so far:

Dr. Ian Malcolm: God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs.
Dr. Ellie Sattler: Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the earth.

Dr. Ian Malcolm: [as they escape the T-Rex chasing after them in the Jeep] You think they'll have that on the tour?

Ray Arnold: Hold on to your butts.

Tim: What do you call a blind dinosaur?
Dr. Alan Grant: I don't know. What do you call a blind dinosaur?
Tim: A Do-you-think-he-saurus.
Dr. Alan Grant: Ha ha. Good one.
Tim: What do you call a blind dinosaur's dog?
Dr. Alan Grant: You got me.
Tim: A Do-you-think-he-saurus Rex.

Dr. Ian Malcolm: Occasionally. Yeah, I'm always on the lookout for a future ex-Mrs. Malcolm.

So that was fun. And today was fun as well. Benefit for the Music Mentor. She couldn't make it and spent it in the hospital instead.

Not good.

But we sang some camp songs and they called her and put it on speakerphone. Almost cried when they told us her reaction.

A bit off key but I'll take it.

So we started with Someday, did a few she wrote, then some hymns and praise hymnal stuff, and then our finale was There's a Hole in the Bucket. Don't ask.

Afterwards I watched the Red/White game. Dad had no interest but picked Nebraska to win it.

Big guess there since it's Nebraska vs. Nebraska.

And if you ever thought the Huskers were cocky or that they are obsessed with winning then you got nothin' on this game. Jack aka Team Rex made an appearance. He's a kid with cancer, and went in for a play. They gave him the ball and the whole red team surrounded him as he ran for a touchdown.

So he's officially in the stats book with 69 yards.

Check this.

So cute.

Anyway, watched some NCIS afterward, stopped by the boyfriend's place on the way back. Ended up going to dinner with his parents and then picking up locks at walmart.

Mmmm cheesesticks... was fun.

Alright, should really crash now. Working tomorrow.

Clip of the night:

that's a lot of props.

one of my many favorite parts of the show.

and i'm out.

Thursday, April 4, 2013

"Did the president call?" "No."

Well it's official, over 50,000 hits in under 3 years.

Geez.

Didn't think it would get this big.

I should be ecstatic, or creeped out really, but all I am is tired.

Like seriously zonked.

Which is weird cause work was fine, but then I came home and got all stressed so I got all nauseous and just blah.

So what could have been a good day turned into a crapsuck.

But it's fine cause it's over.

The day I mean.

Or it will be in 18 minutes.

Then it will be tomorrow.

I know, this post is complete crap and you're wondering how I got so many views.

The answer is, I have no idea.

Every once in a while I'm clever, but for the most part I'm just random.

Like today.

Today started out great.

Met with the Library Goddess for coffee. She paid. Cause she loves me.

We put together our last newsletter - sad day - and sent that off to be published. Later got an email from her confirming my practicum - so I do get to do it in the fall at the Regional Center. Woohoo!

See, sane people would be more fearful than excited to do a 90 hour practicum there surrounded by legitimate crazy people, but I'm stoked.

So that was coffee.

Afterward I still had time before work so I started reading Silver Linings Playbook - which I bought last week with the Queen of the Known Universe.

The book book that was published in 2008, so long before the movie. Even though the movie is awesome. Which is why I'm reading the book in the first place.

Anyway, basically the book in made up of Pat's narratives on daily life and the road to getting Nikki back. So far it's awesome, I'm loving it.

A bit different from the movie, mostly with the Dad being a lot more anti-social than Robert De Niro was.

Read it before work and then during breaks so on page like 45 I think. Was going to read more tonight but then got distracted by Veep.

Season one from the library.

Love that as well.

It has the chick from My Girl in it, you know that plays Vada? All grown up, I had to look her up, it was driving me nuts trying to figure out what I knew her from.

Favorite quotes so far:
Dan: "She's mediocre really. Of all the 'ocres' she's the mediest."

Selina: "He's not supposed to register emotion. He's supposed to be like a robot geisha."
Amy: "I'll see to it."

Selina: "Did the president call?"
Sue: "No."

That last one takes place in every episode. A lot of unknowns in the cast, aside from Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the lead. She plays the Veep. Most of the show is about someone in her office screwing up, usually she says something that gets misinterpreted or her staff does something stupid, and then it's all about damage control.

But it's hysterical. They're on season two now but I don't have HBO so will probably be waiting for that one to come out on DVD as well. Not sure if you can watch those online, but I will look.

The DVD's are amusing though because all the episodes have commentary which is surprising. What's not surprising is that the one that talks most on the commentary is the dude that plays Jonah. Whom I didn't like originally, but now I do.

I love cast commentaries, though I think She's the Man is my favorite as it also has the whole cast and they're all hysterical. My least favorite being The Sweetest Thing. There's a helium machine in the room and it's just dumb.

Anyway, Veep. I'm liking it. It's highly entertaining. And it's been my distraction tonight. Though I think I should crash soon so I may change it over to X Games or something I've already watched so I'm not tempted to stay up.

Alright, and after all that boringness - sorry - I'll hit you with some music and then crash.

More audition highlights. Working on my top ten, auditions end next week.

Price Tag - Audrey Karrasch

i hate this song. but she's great.
"that is rough."

Safe & Sound - Savannah Berry

"you're soo good."
"you're soo screwed."

"these two guys, three seasons already. they're jaded, they're almost deaf."

"it's a very adoptable age."

Order Raisin Bran on a date, move ahead 3 spaces.

It's crazy to see that one post on here has gotten over 2000 hits in 7 months.

Ridiculous.

Second highest is only 500-something.

Both movie-related, gotta love it.

So, spent the night relaxing and finishing up the newsletter for tomorrow's meeting with the Library Goddess.

Originally I was going to go see the boyfriend but he is sick.

Which means, I'm sure, that I soon will be sick.

Which sucks cause I just got done being sick.

I'm just hoping it's either before or after this weekend, cause I'm not missing the benefit on Saturday.

The relaxation was good. Finishing up watching the Winter X Games, yeah I know, I'm way behind. But I got distracted by library DVDs and The Voice.

But can you blame me, really?

Oh, those of you who aren't fans probably can, but whatever.

You don't know what you're missing.

Felt super accomplished and old today.

Bought supplies for the teen summer reading programs for our library - in charge of setting them up and leading them and all that.

Makes me feel as if I almost have some aspect of power.

But that'll be gone by tomorrow I'm sure.

Going over supplies has gotten me excited again for our programs. Library Golf sounds especially exciting, but I'm hoping the others get attendance too. We're decorating jars and making board games based on our favorite books.

I did it in college with Pride and Prejudice, but I rambled to you about that already.

I'm stoked.

Gonna have to pick a book of my own to make an example board.

"Silver Linings Playbook" is probably a bad idea.

"Go to mental institution. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200."

Though I do like "Order Raisin Bran on a date, move ahead 3 spaces."

Women's Murder Club is also probably a bad idea.

Even though it is my favorite book series.

Oh, how about "He's Just Not That Into You".

That might make for a fun game.

But not one I'd want to play with teenagers.

Hmmm...I'll put it up for debate, what book do you think would make for a cool board game?

And don't say "Hunger Games".

I love it, but I already have pictures of that to show the kids.

Anyway, I have templates for them to use, but they'll create their own boards, game pieces, dice, currency, rules and all that.

Should be fun.

Carter is already konked out next to me.

I was close to that before I started posting.

Need to crash soon since I have early morning meeting with the Library Goddess before work tomorrow.

Working on our last newsletter, sad day.

Can't believe I'll already be done with GA stuff in May.

Which means I'll have to break down and buy my own iPad.

Ugh.

Haha, you know, I didn't think I would use one until they gave me one.

And now I want one.

Quite handy.

Alright, what else from today?

Um, did more training for the new chick.

Who got Slim Shady's job.

And has yet to be nicknamed.

She came over from one of the branches and now her job is open.

Until like Friday.

So we'll see how that goes.

She's cool so far but it's hard to live up to Slim Shady.

Aaannd that's all I really remember about today. Summer Reading supply stuff, training, more training, oh got Amigos for lunch, that was good. Um, finished Murder in Suburbia season one....ummm....oh the cops showed up when we were closing. Some dude called the cops from our courtesy phone. Not because of anything we did, don't worry. He just needed to be picked up before he did something stupid. Made for an interesting walk to the parking lot with the cops there.

Had to not jaywalk in front of them.

Cause that would have been bad.

Not quite as bad as getting pulled over in your sister's driveway with family right behind you, but still bad.

Alright, on to the music.

More Voice Audition Highlights

I Kissed a Girl - Michelle Chamuel

"question eyebrows"
i love this chick, she's awesome. nerd power.

Loca - Monique Abbadie

this chick is badass. that was one of shakira's, if you didn't figure that out from her look of shock in the beginning, or singing and dancing along.
"but my resume is sparkling." "oh really?"
"wow, that was all you got?" "yes adam, i don't wanna waste everybody's time, she's picking shakira, now shut up!"
"all in favor that she pick shakira raise your hand."

Colder Weather - Warren Stone

that's a first.

out!

pre-midnight post, holy crap tag in use.

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

I'll make a note of it.

So apparently it's a crime against humanity that I've never seen the Jurassic Park movies.

So the boyfriend is taking me to see it in 3D this weekend.

Speaking of movies, I'm changing my Scale of Awesome rating for Warm Bodies to 8/10.

I liked it.

And upon further inspection, it deserves a higher rating.

Plus I was like rambling about it today to the New Girl - who has similar taste and we rec shows/movies back and forth all the time, got her hooked on Warehouse...well her, Queen of the Known Universe, Wordie, Infoman, the Wordsmith, etc.

It was good.

And I like the blonde chick - Teresa Palmer, had to look that one up - and then the main dude was the boy in About a Boy.

Rachel Weisz, Hugh Grant, if you haven't seen it look it up, it's amusing.

So today was good.

Much less stressful than yesterday's mass hysteria.

The Favorite Aunties and their husbands stopped by to pick up a book.

Gave them a tour, well of 2nd floor at least.

In the limited time I had before I had to move to the next desk.

But it was good to see them.

So that was the highlight of the workday.

Actually started the workday early, went in for training in the morning - constant software updates with our new system so we learned new search stuff.

Which I understood more about because of my cataloging class, huzzah.

Dig it.

And then of course the papers I wrote on Koha for my Info Tech class.

Coincidentally, the professor for that class is now our Assistant Director.

aka my Boss's Boss's Boss's assistant.

But it was good, learned some new stuff, wasn't a fan of it being so early but had to do it before opening.

And going in early meant I got to get off early so I did my fair share of errands tonight before crashing on the couch and watching The Voice, Castle, Bones - holy crap Claudia Donovan alert! sorry, Warehouse 13, I thought for sure they were going to make her the killer. I was like nooooooooo!!! not Claudia!! - and then Splash.

That show is getting even more interesting - I know, isn't it awful - but seriously, tonight they did team diving and dude, Drake Bell I love and Katherine Webb is cool so they did this synchronized dive called the "javelin". You gotta see it for yourselves...

I know, I know, it's ridiculous.

But I like him.

And I like Rory Bushfield - good god, they stuck him Kendra what's her name who *spoiler alert* chickened out on their dive and forfeited.

Which meant everyone moved on but her.

I would have been pissed if it effected him too.

Anyway, so I'm rooting for Rory and Drake.

And now Katherine, cause that was badass.

I was also productive tonight, in case you were like, holy crap that's a lot of TV, cause I did homework.

And made plans with Chief - an old friend - we're gonna get dinner on Thursday.

Tomorrow I'm going out to see the boyfriend.

Friday he's coming here.

Saturday is the music mentor's benefit thing.

Oh, and have I mentioned that I'm going on a motorcar ride with the boyfriend end of April?

Remember how I mentioned he has a slight obsession with trains?

Nothing I'm not used to.

If you know my dad you know what I'm talking about, I grew up surrounded by trains.

But the boyfriend - and his dad - have taken it to a whole new level, living next to the tracks and also buying, they're called Speeders.

Go here.

It's basically a big box that rides on the tracks.

He owns like 7 now.

Though in a couple weeks there will be more.

He's riding a train all the way out to Seattle to get more actually.

But that's more of a long story.

Anyway, so end of the month we're going to Iowa to ride one of them.

Am actually pretty excited about it.

Should be fun.

And I get to meet all of his railroad friends - which means he has to introduce me to one in particular.

Which I think he's avoiding, mostly because the friend gives him crap for dating me.

See, he knows my dad.

Well, everyone knows my dad - it's a whole train community thing - but anyway, he knows my dad (and refers to me as his daughter) and he knows that me and the boyfriend used to date.

I did mention that right?

We dated in high school?

And in college?

He took me to prom.

Reconnected after we'd both grown up a bit.

Yeah, yeah, I know aww.

Don't give me that girly crap, I'm already giddy enough at the moment.

Legitimately. Deliriously. Happy.

Which does not happen often for me.

So I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

But enough of that, has anyone watched the 100th episode of Psych?

Much better than the 100th episode of Castle I just watched, what was that? Seriously?

Anyway, Psych is basically a tribute to Clue.

Which is one of my favorite movies of all time.

And we've watched it at Teen Camp like 3 times, kind of a tradition much like Cosmo's War of the Planets.

There are so many great references, I love it!

If you're a Clue fan, check out this episode! It's probably up on USA's website by now since it actually aired like Wednesday.

Yep. It's up.

Has Scarlet and Green and Plum in it.

Plus Earl from 2 Broke Girls.

So many references, I love it!

Aww, a tribute to Madeline Kahn.

That makes me sad.

Mrs. White was my favorite character.

Funny story, my family used to play Clue and when you're not playing you pick the cards of the who, with what and where, you know?

And so I always picked the ones from the movie, like Mrs. White in the Billiard Room with the rope, etc.

So it was either Oldest Sister or King of Useless Knowledge, but they figured out that system and so they went around guessing the movie 'til they got it right.

Geez, I haven't played that game in forever.

Actually, there's an extended version that's even better.

Oldest Sister and King of Useless Knowledge actually own it and we used to play it all the time, me and the neighbor girl, whom I still talk to cause she's awesome. And she's getting married. And so is her brother. Which reminds me I need to RSVP for that online.

Anyway, the game was called Master Detective and it had more characters, like there was a Miss Peach and Madame Rose and Sargent Grey, and then there were more rooms like a Carriage House and all that.

I can't remember if there were more weapons too, but some of the weapon game pieces were missing so instead of Master Detective, we used to call it Master Defective.

"I'll make a note of it" was common reference.

Alright, on to the music before I find something else to ramble about.

More Blind Audition highlights.

I'm the Only One - Karina Iglesius

love adam and blake at the end.
and then telling shakira to shut up.
there's been a mega amount of spanish singing this year since Shakira joined the cast.

Seven Nation Army - Garrett Gardner

like this guy cause he came back after not making it last season.
loved adam's arm raise.
he'll make my top ten. probably won't win it but takes a lot of courage to come back.

To Make You Feel My Love - Holly Tucker

she's fantastic. def in my top ten.
"i think cowboy boots are great."

"say something human....how are you?....nailed it."

Today was crazy ridiculous.

I don't think the library has ever been this busy all day long.

Like there have been times when it's super busy, but not all day long.

Think I had like 2 minutes of silence the entire day.

It was good to have a night of relaxation, met up with the boyfriend and we saw Warm Bodies.

Which Infoman labeled as a "zombie romance" I didn't know anything more about it, other than it had Number Six in it - as in I Am Number Four.

The book/movie.

She's Australian but she rocked the American accent.

It was actually okay.

Not your typical zombie movie, and it had a lot of humor in it.

Scale of Awesome puts it at about 8/10.

Will probably watch it again when it's out on DVD.

After that we watched bits and pieces of Red Tails, Tower Heist and Airplane!

Before he went to work and I had to head back to the apartment.

And I go in early tomorrow for training so I need to konk out soon.

But not before watching The Voice.

I know, I'm awful.

But hey, I only have to be up in 7 hours.

Interesting fact I learned today from a patron - the bandaid jingle - "I am stuck on bandaid brand cause bandaid's stuck on me" - was actually written by Barry Manilow.

His most popular song.

I'd rec one of his but I can't stand anything that's not "her name was Lola...."

So instead you get Queen.
