Took last night off. Figured you'd heard enough from me the night before.
Yes, it was epic.
But I promise it won't happen again for another 500 posts at least.
A few things you missed:
1. Watched Trance with the boyfriend.
Weird. Weird. Weird. It started out really good and then everything circled back so it was okay, but in the middle it got really really weird. Scale of Awesome says 6/10.
2. Killer Women finally premiered. So excited for the return of Beth Riesgraf. It was weird seeing Carla play the cop instead of the bad guy. Or girl, sorry. I miss Burn Notice already.
3. Jordis Unga now follows me on Twitter.
I know, I freaked. The only problem is that I found out at lunch when I was surrounded by people. I could feel my eyes pop out of my head, it was ridiculous.
For those of you know who don't know, Jordis Unga is wicked awesome. She was on the Voice season two and she was my pick for the winner but she got beat out mid-season.
Here she is on INRX cause my Voice clips aren't working.
Epic.
And her new single is officially out.
So take that world.
4. It snowed like crazy today. Like all day. It was supposed to stop in the morning, then at noon, but it went on until like 3. I like snow, I do, but driving on it sucks.
5. TAB meeting this afternoon. We picked out the teen Summer Reading events for this year and planned out our first web series episode. Maybe I'll post a link when it's published.
6. The People's Choice Awards were on tonight. Sketch and I did some commentating as always. Lots of fun.
Here are some things I learned:
-Not all of those waitresses were female. "Some of me are definitely dudes."
-Ellen Degeneres bakes a hell of a cookie.
-Justin Timberlake thinks putting the dishes in the dishwasher is healthy for your marriage.
-People still watch The Good Wife.
-They're bringing Chuck back but they're calling it Intelligence.
-Beth Behrs can sing. And rap.
-Adam's speech was still my favorite. 3 guesses why.
If you know me you got it in 1.
-Drew loves fanny packs. That is one thing I didn't know about her.
-Sarah Michelle Gellar and Britney Spears somehow majestically have never won a People's Choice Award until tonight. What happened when they were popular the last time?
-Le man, Le myth, LeBlanc has still got it. Unfortunately he couldn't perform his honky-tonk LeBlanc-a-donk cause they were in a rush.
-2 Broke Girls still rock, even when live.

and the mutants over at table nine.
Took a night off yesterday as I didn't have much to say.
Not that that's changed today.
Slept in - only worked 12-4 - then got to lead a comps review. Well, the Library Goddess was technically in charge as we did it over speakerphone but I had half and she had half.
Except I'm not taking comps yet so I don't have the links. But they did so we were fine. It was a good group, pretty self-sufficient so it was fun.
After that Smo came over, she has class in town tomorrow so she's staying over.
We watched some Storage Wars and 2 Broke Girls after realizing that out the 26 people that graduated half of them are already married or engaged.
But that's huge cause like 2 years ago there were only 2 of us married.
To each other.
It's amusing to look back at those yearbooks and see how much people have changed.
Thinking back I wanted to teach high school English.
Now I sort of do.
I got the Teen Advisory Board and I work in Lit so I'm calling it a win.
No, I was in the ed program but dropped it after realizing how many hoops you have to jump through to get your degree. English was good enough for me and I'm glad I dropped it cause then I wouldn't be in the library world today.
I'm excited about the library world this week. Tomorrow is my night off so hopefully I'll be able to see the boyfriend, but Wednesday and Thursday I'm touring some sweet special libraries for class. Secret passage ways, ghost stories, etc. More on that later.
With these 2 online courses there's been some interesting stuff so far as well. We're working on this "story behind a story" project where you pick something in the news and then tie it with other links you think match so like if you were focusing on Sandy Hook you could talk about gun control, grief counseling, etc.
I'm thinking of going with the whole Obama thinking football is too dangerous. We do live in the center of Husker Nation where the majority of the residents are Husker fanatics - leaving out half my colleagues of course - but I'm thinking I can include stuff about concussions side effects, maybe statistics on injuries, talk about the history of football safety standards - the evolution of helmets and padding, etc.
We have to have 5 links and create a source ourself so you may be getting a blog entry on something of the like so I can link to it.
So here's your forewarning.
Don't know, it sounds fun and that's what I was going for. It's gotta be a national/international news thing that's relevant to our patron base. And really that's all I could think of that I found legitimately interesting.
I'll keep you posted on the progress I'm sure.

all she wants to do is dance
Okay, so the plan for this morning was get up at 7:30, drive to G-Town and golf with G-Wigger and Obi-Wan.
However, when my alarm went off at 7:30 I basically groaned and hit snooze.
The combination of going out the night before, not sleeping because my cat was being a pain in the butt, and that I got to bed late in the first place didn't bode well for me.
So I called/texted and they said sleep.
Didn't phase them though, they went anyway. I think they're becoming die-hards. Which is amusing, cause the first year we went we seriously seriously sucked and Pastor carried us. Maybe it's the Packers golfbag. Spurred them on.
Oh well, we're going in a couple of Saturdays so we can jam out then.
Anyway, totally went back to sleep and stayed in bed 'til about noon. Then did all my laundry - shocking - cleaned my apartment, watched "Big Miracle" Scale of Awesome says about 7/10, it was okay and based on a true story, but mostly it had Drew Barrymore in it and since she's just pure awesome every movie, including her crappy ones - not that she has any, rate at least a 5/10.
did I mention i'm a nerd.
Flew through a bunch of editing which was good.
I also finalized the camp picture CD which was apparently too large to burn before even though it worked on one. Apparently a thousand pictures are a bit much so I cut it down to about 750.
Which is still excessive I guess, but it works. And the kids enjoy them.
Oh and finally got all the way through the olympics, closing ceremony included. Loved the Spice Girls reunion though it was amusing to watch them attempt to sing and dance while standing on a car in motion. Like they had to choose between holding on for their life or dancing.
Which would you choose?
Okay, think I'm gonna crash. Not that it was a long day, but I do have to work tomorrow.

To dye, or not to dye? That is the question.
You know what's really sad?
When you sacrifice your hair color for your job.
Seriously.
I like my fire-engine red hair! And Superwoman approves. But, to some, it seems unprofessional. And, as I work in public service, perhaps that's not the best thing. So, tomorrow, when I go and get my hair dyed and chopped, but mostly dyed, I'm debating just getting highlights. I know! What happened?! Just highlights?! What has working public service done to you?! I'm asking myself those same questions. And I blame it on the night shift.
Tuesday night night-shifts always somehow turn into a debate. Space Cadet and I always have completely random conversations - you can read all about our sea cow vs. snow leopard debate from last week here: My Life in Closed Captions: I guess I'll go on home, it's late. There'll be to... Today the majority of our conversations revolved around my hair color. She doesn't want me to dye it. "But whyyyy? It's so pretty! Just say no!" And then she pulled the ultimate mom question.
"Why does your hair need to be red?"
"Because it does?"
"But why?"
"Because I like it red."
"Why red?"
...
I had no answer. Had to do some soul-searching. All this from hair-dyeing, I know. Seriously? But it was one of those questions. "I don't know, it's just always been red." Which, again, wasn't really an answer. So I'm trying to think of one now.
I wasn't the most popular kid growing up. Grade school was kind of a disaster area and high school was just interesting. Going away to a dorm school and living with the same people 24/7... there has to be some room for rebellion. I found that in my writings and dyeing my hair. Mom is okay with it because it's temporary, unlike tattoos or piercings. Not that she'd have that problem with me, I see a needle and I pass out. Literally.
And it worked for things like One Act and Drama productions. I dyed my hair so many colors - red, blonde, blue, orange, purple, black and back to the original brown we forgot it was. But I liked red because it was way out there.
Plus I was a Charlie's Angels nut and that was Dylan's hair color. Yes, let's blame my hair diagnosis on Drew Barrymore. It's not like my friends don't already blame her for enough of my habits.
But that was then. Well, the Charlie's Angels stuck, but should the hair color? At the time I liked it being so out there. Loud and obnoxious. I wore my headphones and skater clothes, talked my idiot slang talk, made friends with some interesting characters, picked up some bad habits. But am I really that person anymore? Am I supposed to be? I'm a professional now. Getting my Master's. Working two jobs. Running a kids camp.
I'm over-thinking things. I should just dye it and get it over with. Actually have one thing in my life that's the old me. Instead of the public service me. Which apparently has made me both a social person and semi-morning friendly. And do things like debate highlights vs. hair dye.
Like I said, over-thinking. So, why red? Why does it define me? It's loud and obnoxious. It sticks out in a crowd. It makes me quirky and gives my family plenty of ammo to throw at me.
Aren't you supposed to stick out in public service anyway? The chick that interviews people for OPL says she wouldn't hire anyone who picked "invisible" as their super power. You're supposed to be seen and out there helping people.
And librarians are known for being way out there. With our green tea and literature references. Although my grammar is still atrocious. On purpose mostly. So perhaps red hair would be the right choice.
I guess it'll be up to Donna tomorrow. Maybe she can point me in the right direction. Hmmm...

"We're angels, not saints."
Well, that was interesting.
Classic Charlie's Angels with the cheesy dialogue, models everywhere and big action sequences. Although I'm happy that I didn't have to grab the remote and turn the volume down everytime the music came on like in the original series. And Bosley?! What the crap? He's got mad fighting skills now! And they're very tech-friendly. Which is cool but not so believable. Charlie shows his wealth, but they're in Miami and it's present day so that makes sense. It's just a massive change over.
And I could live with all of that. But the voice of Charlie totally killed it for me. It's like, he sounds almost like a computer. Or a really old and weak man. Which is anti-Charlie. Cause Charlie is supposed to be a ladies man constantly surrounded by women. And this dude....just no. I don't like it. And John Forsythe is dead. And originally it was supposed to be Robert Wagner. But it's clearly not. Perhaps he will man up in the future.
But I'll stick with it. Cause Drew's producing - Drew Covergirl Commercials for pilot = 4 - and it's Charlie's Angels and it's Flower Films and it's ABC. Even though that last one means that it's done. ABC doesn't give their new series a chance. Especially if they have a female lead, let alone more than one. It's toast. But I like it and I'll watch it anyway. I was impressed by that Grey's chick as the lead. And the new chick should be interesting. The preview for next week seems dramatic and cheesy and exciting, very Angels style with big explosions and tackling people. I'll keep you posted.
Today was interesting. Staff meeting in the morning, switched out my Sept. 11th display of one about Books to Movies/TV. I TOTALLY PUT 1ST TO DIE ON THE DISPLAY! YEAH WMC! It will live forever! Bring it!
That and Reichs books, Harry Potter, Mary Shelley, Dracula, ummm....Runaway Jury....ummmm I don't know there were a lot. But it' awesome and I'm proud.
After that it was more fun as an Aide where we shifted - massively - the bottom row up. Cause I'm both crazy and stupid and apparently enjoy books falling on my head. Luckily I live my life surrounded by children so I've learned to censor myself and the vulgarity was kept to a minimum.
But no one can see anything on the bottom row so I moved it up. And now it's all pretty and in order. Not that it will be by tomorrow, but it was worth the afternoon.
Tomorrow is gonna be a long day so I'm totally out....after singing YEAH TOAST all day I'm in need of a change of tune.

Everybody Dance Now!
In the immortal words of the cool aunt, "Everts women show up." Today was one of those days.
Worked 11-2, shelving all the carts and scanning all the first readers/board books. After all that I headed to G-Town for a big family shindig at the Heritage aka the old-folks-home. The place gives me the heebie-jeebies, but the event seemed to go off without a hitch. 17 of us came and ate lunch with my great aunt who's living there now. I think that had to be one of the bigger groups. They put us outside. "They asked us to leave before we even got in. Our reputation preceeds us." Yes, we're THAT side of the family. The side that gets kicked out of places like Valentinos, and...churches....cause we're loud and obnoxious. But it's all in good fun. It was good to be outside though cause the kids got to run around and play in the mud. If they were running the hallways inside we would drive people bananas. Plus it was an awesome day!
Unfortunately, since it started out as rain-central the games tonight got cancelled. I think it was Prince of Peace scared of us and making excuses. Not really. But maybe. But, seriously? What the crap? Cause that specialized gravel crap that I keep breaking my leg open on is made to soak up all the water and make it playable. Geez. Was totally bummed. But we'll take them on next week. Or the week after that. Either way they're going down! Grace Geneva! I've started yelling that randomly. It actually originated during the Husker volleyball game when I was with Megz and Homey-G. We were talking about the game and had to get in the line for the bathroom and like the bathroom at the Devaney are weird where there are two entrances and they converge. And it's like a 4-way-stop cause you have to like alternate or something cause there's no one there to say, okay you go next. You just have to like make a run for it. And we were joking in line saying, "okay you box them out and I'll run and yell I win! Grace Geneva!" You can take the girl out of the honky tonk but you can't take the honky tonk out of the girl.
It's just weird going back to that place, even though the building is completely different than it was 8 years ago. And they served us fried chicken. Two flashbacks today. Cool Aunt doesn't eat chicken either, but she's semi-vegetarian so she has a legitimate excuse. Mine sounds pathetic, but when explained it makes sense. I don't eat it because of the memories that go along with it. It physically makes me nauseous. But I forced myself to today. And don't go all shrink on me. If you tried to analyze my crazy you'd drive yourself there. But I think that goes with the whole public service thing. If you don't enter with it you leave with some degree of insanity. Which was actually sort of a discussion topic today with one of my cooler relatives that I will, for now, refer to as The Snarky One. I'll work on the nickname, it has to be something worthy. But she always makes me laugh so I was glad I got to hang with her today.
Tomorrow's going to be a long day. Even though I'm technically done at 1. I'll come home and take a nap. Or watch something - I got a bunch of stuff through Interlibrary Loan that I should get through so I can request something else.

but this is a contender for a walkup song at softball. Cool sister-in-law can have her "Back in Black" - oh yeah, another relative asked as it is church league if they should be from the hymnal. I can only imagine someone making a rock version of Amazing Grace or something. Rockin' the Doxology. Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war.
I'm still debating on mine. Think I'm gonna put my ipod on shuffle and see which one I can jam to the most. OUT!
Worked 11-2, shelving all the carts and scanning all the first readers/board books. After all that I headed to G-Town for a big family shindig at the Heritage aka the old-folks-home. The place gives me the heebie-jeebies, but the event seemed to go off without a hitch. 17 of us came and ate lunch with my great aunt who's living there now. I think that had to be one of the bigger groups. They put us outside. "They asked us to leave before we even got in. Our reputation preceeds us." Yes, we're THAT side of the family. The side that gets kicked out of places like Valentinos, and...churches....cause we're loud and obnoxious. But it's all in good fun. It was good to be outside though cause the kids got to run around and play in the mud. If they were running the hallways inside we would drive people bananas. Plus it was an awesome day!
Unfortunately, since it started out as rain-central the games tonight got cancelled. I think it was Prince of Peace scared of us and making excuses. Not really. But maybe. But, seriously? What the crap? Cause that specialized gravel crap that I keep breaking my leg open on is made to soak up all the water and make it playable. Geez. Was totally bummed. But we'll take them on next week. Or the week after that. Either way they're going down! Grace Geneva! I've started yelling that randomly. It actually originated during the Husker volleyball game when I was with Megz and Homey-G. We were talking about the game and had to get in the line for the bathroom and like the bathroom at the Devaney are weird where there are two entrances and they converge. Can't Touch This

More Charlie's Angels. I'm hooked all over again. But still in second and third season. The longer I stick with these two the less likely I'll get to season four when I'll be horribly depressed by the lack of Sabrina. "I love you, I'll prove it, you won't like it, I don't care." My new motto for life. That and "Well that's something to scrapbook."
Today was something to scrapbook. I realized how out of shape I am - after last night's softball game I'm just in pain. My leg was throbbing all day, I had to keep it wrapped because it's disgusting - granted not as bad as last year's - and when you're shelving it's always up and down, dude, that hurt. Plus I'm still exhausted. But I love the double-header. Totally worth it, pumped for Saturday. Prince of Peace is going down. They're the team we never beat. And of course we play them when Pastor and his wife are out of town. But Homey-G-Wigger and me got the jump on them cause we played them yesterday with the E-Free. Their pitcher always kicks my butt, there's like a spin on it. Makes everything pop up so they can catch it. So I try to tomahock it and chop it down but that shoots it straight to the shortstop with the killer arm. I'm toast. But we'll see. So far we are the team to beat, I think. Cause we plowed the Methodists. And we as E-Free almost beat Prince of Peace - we were up by two until they decided to have a major comeback and scored like 8 in two innings. It was still a closer game than ours. Maybe this time G and I'll actually make it for real ice cream as tradition instead of the gas station kind that we got last night and last year after we played on their team as well. It's hard to find a place that's open past 8PM in G-Town. But the ice cream Snickers bar was fantastic.
After desking in the morning - can that be a verb? I'm making it one - and shelving in the afternoon I started working on my homework, blah! Reading and posting the highlights of an article on Leadership and Management and Libraries and surveys and Emotional Intelligence and blah. It's my article, I found it, so it's my fault, but still. blah. It'll be worth it in the end.

this is what happens whenever i have to move or clean, get distracted by the jam and dance, though i have yet to knock over a couch in the process. took them a day to come up with and film the dance.
yes i'm on an angels binge. it'll be over with soon enough i'm sure. it goes in spurts. i'm sure i'll get distracted by warehouse or chuck or something i get from the library soon enough.
oh no! some dude shot his mom while there was a burglar in the other room! can't really go to the cops for that..."so i was robbing this place, and this gun, it went off in the other room! and i went to check and she was dead! just dead!" "you were robbing the place?" "yeah, so? he shot her dead!"
ohhh, wait, that wasn't his mom? eww! generation gap ahoy!

Ghetto Superstar, that is what you are
Don't you hate it when you pack up a bunch of DVD's and books and stuff that are due but you forget they're in your bag so you totally don't drop them off even though you watched them like weeks ago but you keep forgetting to pack them and then when you finally don't forget you end up forgetting that you for once didn't forget so you forget to put them in the slot? Did that make sense?

Totally stoked for Charlie's Angels the new series produced by Drew Barrymore, huzzah! Starting up on the 22nd of September which I guess is the 35th anniversary of the original series - take that Mom! I must be good since it's lasted that long! She makes fun of me cause I love it. So does Sketch, but whatever. The cheesy stunts and the too-loud music just adds to the show's dynamic of comedy, action, and more comedy. Cheesefest style.

So, from what I can tell, other than Drew's company Flower Films producing it they have the three angels - which to me are completely unknowns except for the blonde who played Lucy Fields on Grey's this past year.
And it's completely different - the chicks aren't all cops who were tired of the boring daily life, one was a thief, one was a dirty cop and the other was a carjacker and it's like Charlie is giving them a second chance or something.
Bosely is some dude who was in Battle Los Angeles, Robert Wagner was going to do the voice of Charlie but there was some sort of conflict there so I don't know if he's still attached to the project. But it will be Thursday nights on ABC like right before Grey's at 7.

This pilot is supposed to have Dina Meyer in it - aka Holly Snow from NCIS, Lady Irina from Castle, and Kate Miller from Friends. you know, the one that doesn't like Joey back, his costar who makes fun of him cause he couldn't open a carton of milk on an infomercial, then they're friends and they stay up talking and then she ditches him for LA? You know? maybe not. you have lives. I forget that sometimes.

Had a burrito for supper, it was awesome. Think I'm gonna start going there more often. They have green tea too so I give them a thumbs up. Scale of Awesome says 9/10. Was nice, got off at 5 then started season one of 24. I'm still up in the air about that one. At this point I could take it or leave it. It's not all that intriguing and I'm kind of like, do I really need another series? I've got Six Feet Under waiting for me on the shelf plus all the ones I actually watch, if this one isn't interesting why put up with the 80 millions seasons it went through? Scale of Awesome says 5/10. I like some of the storylines but others are just stupid and I want them to move in. Which they don't. There are like 8 different storylines going at once. And it's 24 cause it's like 24 hours a day. Each episode is an hour in the day and it's like that for a whole season so like season 2 would be 24 hours of the next day. So, if there were like 8 seasons, which I think is what it was, but don't bet on that I don't really like the show so it's a total guess, it would just be 8 days total.

3 guesses as to who said that. Post-its, she's talking about post-its. Didn't know people could get that excited about post-its, but you should have seen my dorm rooms in college. Whenever I went on a writing binge they were hung all over the walls along with pictures of the characters and notes about their quirks, possible storylines and all that. I'm a nerd. I pick a character name then google for images on what I think they might look like, print them off and hang them up. Haven't had a chance to do that yet in my new apartment, it might look awkward in the living room, people see that room. Granted anyone who actually enters the room already knows about my crazy but for the maintenance people who occasionally visit, they don't need to know all about the crazy.
It is about time though - not for the crazy but for the pictures and all. Need to get back into the apartment story. I actually worked on that a little tonight just character names and ideas for each apartment.
alright, split shift tomorrow. gotta clean the apartment as well. out!

This is a week of my favorite things Day Four: Books
PREPARE FOR A MASSIVE POST and sadly I went through and cut a bunch of stuff...and it's still massive.
Birthday cake at a staff meeting, hooray my day is made!
Was going to head home tonight but the weather has changed my plans.
Looks like you're stuck with me for yet another favorites post.
Quote of the day comes from Sketch - "I want a bagel damn it can't you tell i'm hungry and yes it's lame but that's how you are when you're all whoooo." yeah, not gonna explain that one, other than to say it's not the bagel that she's talking about me being all whoooo over.
This time we'll go with books. Writing's in my blood, my grandpa's a published author (posthumous), my aunts have published books on teaching, and I just love to write. If I could it's what I would do all day...if I wasn't blocked, which I have been a lot lately. that's why you're stuck with me on here and not on physical pages.
So, since I'm a librarian and I'm around books all day I'm expanding my list from 5 favorites to 7 instead. The irony about being a librarian is that I haven't read a single one of these books since I started working there. It's like I'm around them all day the last thing I want to do when I go home is read a book. Which is kind of funny in a weird way.
Anyway, on with the list.
All-time favorites:
7. Harry Potter series - J.K. Rowling
Gotta say I started these before she was big time with the movies and everything and I was hooked. I read each of them in like a day, maybe hours. Mass hysteria but they were just soooo good. And so different from other books at the time which I think is why they became so popular. Aside from her writing style and her characters which are also fantastic. I was hooked.
6. When You Are Engulfed in Flames - David Sedaris
This might be the funniest book I've ever read. I read the entire thing at a craft show and there were many points at which I was physically laughing so loud that I needed to like step back and contain myself so the people around me didn't think I was some psycho just randomly laughing. Highly recommended if you like nonfiction.

5. The Book Thief - Marcus Zuzak
Read this one for an adolescent lit class in college and fell in love with it. It's narrated by Death which totally stuck out to me so you know everyone is going to die. Which is fine, until you meet the characters and want them to somehow just triumph and live forever. It's basically a German take on the whole nazi killing jews thing. And it follows the story of this little girl who's adopted into a German family. I think it was also cool to be reading it for a class and having that debate aspect where you could get others opinions on it too. Our class consensus was a thumbs up.
4. The Westing Game - Ellen Raskin
Another favorite from my childhood, we read this in 8th grade for an English class. I love it because it was the first murder mystery I ever read. So it all took off from there. I was hooked from page one and wanted to read it all the way through but we were supposed to read it in section so we could talk in class. I soooo wanted to know who did it!! And I've recommended it to many people over the years. Gotta love it.
3. The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins
Yet another from that adolescent lit class and I think this was the class's favorite. I don't remember anybody not liking it (not like Twilight or Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, sorry ZH not so much for me) and I think it was the most fun I had in that class just because everyone loved it and wanted to talk about it. Although the Twilight love it or hate it debate was fun as well.
I've recommended this book to literally everyone who's asked for a recommendation. Which is a lot because I work in a library...two actually. And I'm stoked for the movie. But the problem with recommending it is that those that I recommend it to also read the next two which they love as well but I haven't yet since I started working soon after college. I know, I know. They're on my list.
2. Runaway Jury - John Grisham
I loved this book! I read this one summer during high school and couldn't put it down. So many twists and turns and the movie was great as well but it was totally different than the book since it was on guns instead of cigarettes. Soooo good! Totally recommend this one who likes fiction on like the court system or lawyers or just good vs. evil. It's fantastic.
1. Women's Murder Club series - James Patterson
"In margaritas veritas. I'm in." Big surprise here. Not really. Look at the tattoo to the right. Lindsay Boxer the detective, Cindy Thomas the reporter, Claire Washburn the ME and Jill Bernhardt the lawyer. All different crime aspects covered so when you put them all together and drown them in margaritas you get what we call the Women's Murder Club.
"So, this outfit have a name?"
..."We're sort of a murder club."
"Lindsay's deputized us."
"The margarita posse."
...."Homicide chicks. That's who we are. That's what we do."
The books that lead to the show...that got cut off too early but the books are still going so it's okay. Actually 10th Reunion comes out soon. If you look at my bookshelves one of the first thing you'll notice (aside from that they're organized yes i'm a librarian get over it) is that these are the only books with tabs in them. Cause I'm a nerd. And I can't really explain the tab system just that it's there and it helps me keep track because sometimes I'll just pick one up and start from a random tab and know exactly what's going on. I love them. I love them. And I love them. And yes, I always recommend James Patterson to anyone looking for a good mystery writer as well.
Books I've read for class and loved:
Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian - Sherman Alexie this was another adolescent lit class special and we all really liked it. It was really funny and the artwork was a nice touch along with the humor.
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen which is basically a rite of passage for an English major. Classic, I did a project on it for my final portfolio because I find her fascinating, yes I'm a nerd. But I loved doing it because I got to come up with musical playlists for each character and I even made a board game for the thing and what else, oh wrote updated versions of the scenes and all that stuff. So much fun. Also a good story, Pride Prejudice and Zombies...or the first half which is all I got finished before I started working.
Great Expectations - Charles Dickens another one for an English major this was for British Lit 2 or 3 I can't remember, I think I took them out of order, but I love this one just because of the crazy old lady who wears the wedding dress every day and acts like she's not crazy. Which she is. And I said that repeatedly in a presentation and everyone loved me. hahaha...another fun English presentation was on Mary Robinson.
Me: "She got paid to be a mistress, I love it!"
Dr. Ashby: "You know, there's a word for that..."
Class: "Ohhhhh!!!"
The Illiad and the Odessey - Homer Thurber class and really, reading anything with Thurber was great because even if you didn't like the book he made you see it in a different perspective so you didn't hate it. did that make sense? not really. But there are really classics that deserve to be classics. A classmate and I did a presentation on the Illiad with sock puppets. Oh yeah. Sock puppets. It was awesome.
Bridge to Teribithia - Katherine Paterson More grade school fun, I cried. and that's all I got.
Anything Shakespeare but especially As You Like It and Twelfth Night
we read As You Like It in high school for English 9 I think and I fell in love with his style and his language and just everything. And Twelfth Night I love just because of all the drama and the back and forth and the mistaken identity and mostly because of yet another presentation for yet another Thurber class (Shakespeare, it was my favorite class of his) where he put us into groups and we had to present each play in a unique way. Our group got Twelfth Night so we divided up the scenes and presented them in like a Whose Line is it Anyway kind of thing with a censored scene (I was the Censored Seductress with the name tag to prove it) an E-True Shakespearian story, a soap opera called 'Days of our Night', silent acting, one segment with the crocodile hunter that we called 'Malvolio Hunter', a scene where I got interrogated in a prison cell while Anna sang in rhyme it was hilarious and I had to keep a straight face, and then the final scene was Mystery Date where all the identities were revealed.
Books I loved growing up and for fun throughout school:
You Belong to Me - Mary Higgins ClarkRead this one I think the same summer I read Runaway Jury. I loved it because I loved the song and I thought it was cool to murder people and tie it to something like that. Not that I'm going to go out and do that but it was still a clever way to tell a story.
All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten - Robert Fulghum
Yet another from a summer in high school. I remember reading this one outside on a swing, he's hilarious and this is probably his best work. So if you're looking for good and short nonfiction go for Robert Fulghum.
Princess Bride - William Goldman senior year of high school, class trip to chicago I read it on the plane. I loved the movie so I read the book and there are so many more things in it with the zoo of death and all that, definitely worth reading if you liked the movie.
Carrie - Stephen King yeah, yeah name sake and all that. I read it in grade school and I think it was my first actual adult novel. scared the crap out of me but I was hooked.
Little Girl Lost - Drew Barrymore more high school fun. discovered this book and wrote a report on it. I love Drew, which I'm sure you've picked up since post one, so reading this book was like the best thing ever. Cause she wrote it. It tells all of her life story - up til checking herself into rehab (not for the first time) and doesn't leave out any of the gory details.
Politically Correct Bedtime Stories - James Finn Garner ask the BFF and she'll tell you she only keeps me around for reading her fairy tales in voices.
Julie and Julia - Julie Powell read it during down town of camping with the family, loved it. totally different from the movie which was also good. i attempted her second one "Cleaving" but again, that was after I started working for the library.
The DaVinci Code - Dan Brown read this one and wrote a paper on it for a college class, also totally different from the movie but it's still fantastic. i couldn't put it down.
Heat Wave/Naked Heat - Richard CastleI'm a Castle junkie so when these actually came out to go along with the show I was all over them. Oh crap. That breaks my streak of not finishing anything since I started working, damn. I liked saying that. Oh well, it was worth it. Heat Wave is definitely the best of the two but there are so many more jokes you get if you watch the show.
Holy toast this post is getting long. Well, if you're still around I'll give you the highlights to my favorite plays...which I'm aware aren't books but they're still literature so whatever. I'll make it short.
Favorite Plays:
Arsenic and Old Lace - Joseph Kesselring We had the joy of putting this on my senior year of high school. I played Elaine the minister's daughter who's the fiance to the main character. Soooo much fun!
"There's something about calling for a girl at a parsonage that discourages any man who doesn't embroider."
"For a minister's daughter you sure you a lot about life. Where'd you learn it?"
"In the choir loft."
"I'll explain that to you some time, darling-the close connection between eroticism and religion."
"Religion never gets as high as the choir loft."
The Playboy of the Western World - J.M. Synge oh the joy of Modern and Post-Modern Drama, I loved that class. This was a highlight because this dude comes into town claiming to have murdered his father and everyone loves him. They celebrate him as a hero. Then, when his father shows up not dead they turn their backs on him. Hilarious.
Arcadia - Tom Stoppard such clever writing, two storylines happening at once even though they're decades apart. everything weaves together in the end, stick with it.
On the Verge or The Georgraphy of Yearning - Eric Overmyer my favorite play I read throughout college. These three women take a trip through a jungle and are simultaneously traveling through time as they travel farther and farther through the jungle. "Terra Incognita!" Each character is different and it's just sooo funny.
"Yes, Mary, there are two sorts of people in the world. There are cannibals-and there are lunch."
"Little sasquatch has gone for more snowballs, no doubt!" *hit by snowball* "Ahhh!"
"Baby yeti may have yeti croonies, I think prudence dictates we move on."
"Why is there evil in the world, Alexandra?"
"To thicken the plot." Alex is my hero.
"Alex I believe verse is your province."
"Hang ten. Shoot the pipeline. Curl the Big Kahuna!" Again, Alex is my hero.
"So, when's the shindig?"
"Shindig?"
"I think she means the the authentic suburban charred meat festival you promised us."
"Ah, yes. The bar-be-cue."
and yes, I did write a report on this one as well but it was more focused on the language and how it changes throughout the novel.
Tartuffe - Moliere another presentation where a friend and myself acted out a scene, well two scenes that we combined, for a grade. We got an A it was fantastic. I still remember some of my lines.
"What of Tartuffe then, what of your father's plan?"
"I'll kill myself, if I'm forced to marry that man."

"Not Tartuffe! You know I think him-"
"Tartuffe's your cup of tea, and you shall drink him."

Moby Dick - Herman Melville no normal person cares how many dimensions a boat has or a whale has. i mean maybe some people but we don't need to read about it in detail in a novel. just no.
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley sorry SuperHumann, loved the discussion with you but the novel was a little like, um...whoa. gross.
Books I've started since working at the library and love so far but still haven't finished them:
Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger Yes this may be the most well-loved novel by serial killers everywhere but screw statistics, it's excellent.
Novel Destinations - Shannon McKenna Schmidt this is cool because it's nonfiction about all the different locations in famous novels
Slaugherhouse-Five - Kurt Vonnegut Kilgore Trout. Need I say more? Even Prentiss is a fan.
You're a Horrible Person, But I Like You: The Believer Book of Advice a gift from my sister, ha! But it's fantastic, people write to celebrities for advice and it publishes their answers.

TV - Wipeout, I love the commentary and the big red balls. Hilarious.
And then World's Dumbest, I've already posted a clip from this. I love it, it's where celebrities careers go to die but seriously, it's fantastic. Celebrities do commentary on these stupid clips that people send in and they make lists like the top 20 world's dumbest criminals or 20 world's dumbest brawlers or 20 world's dumbest commercials just that kind of stuff. It's fantastic.
Music - Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (remake classics), Johnny Cash growing up I listened to him all the time my dad is a big fan, Theory of a Deadman I've already posted a song of there's a while ago but everything they do is just epic and awesome. And Saving Abel is also another good band you can jam out to. Plus Stop Making Friends aka Pauley Perrette is freaking awesome. Listen to their song "Fear" and tell me what you think. And um, hello, Glee cast soundtracks? They're all I listen to lately, that show has the best remakes. My most recent favorite is "Don't you want me baby" or "She's not there" but all time it's probably the "Time Warp" (already posted) or "Forget You" (also already posted) with Gwyneth Paltrow (okay I remember typing that name lately so maybe that one's in there) she's got a voice man, I'm stoked she's making a reappearance. I'm a total soundtracks junkie, Glee, Moulin Rouge, Calamity Jane, Oklahoma, Music and Lyrics, Rent, NCIS, Hairspray, Avenue Q, Grease 1&2 (oh, another for the movies post), Coyote Ugly (this is the role for maria bello, i can't even listen to her british accent in mummy 3), Chicago, Mamma Mia (minus pierce brosnan), Rocky Horror, Sister Act, Wedding Singer, Walk the Line even Whip It had a kickass soundtrack, which was Drew's mix tape for the world. Oh crap Whip It! It's derby and it's Drew how did I forget that one? There's a poster on the wall in front of me for crying in the sun. Good thing I'm taking the time to edit these things, otherwise the remainder of the week would be These are a few of my favorite things...that I failed to mention earlier in the week. Which, actually...wouldn't be so bad. I'm still debating what I'm going to do for the rest of the week. Besides hobbies. Or like...yeah no just hobbies. Wow. gonna have to be creative.

This time we'll go with books. Writing's in my blood, my grandpa's a published author (posthumous), my aunts have published books on teaching, and I just love to write. If I could it's what I would do all day...if I wasn't blocked, which I have been a lot lately. that's why you're stuck with me on here and not on physical pages.
So, since I'm a librarian and I'm around books all day I'm expanding my list from 5 favorites to 7 instead. The irony about being a librarian is that I haven't read a single one of these books since I started working there. It's like I'm around them all day the last thing I want to do when I go home is read a book. Which is kind of funny in a weird way.
Anyway, on with the list.
All-time favorites:
7. Harry Potter series - J.K. Rowling
Gotta say I started these before she was big time with the movies and everything and I was hooked. I read each of them in like a day, maybe hours. Mass hysteria but they were just soooo good. And so different from other books at the time which I think is why they became so popular. Aside from her writing style and her characters which are also fantastic. I was hooked.
6. When You Are Engulfed in Flames - David Sedaris
This might be the funniest book I've ever read. I read the entire thing at a craft show and there were many points at which I was physically laughing so loud that I needed to like step back and contain myself so the people around me didn't think I was some psycho just randomly laughing. Highly recommended if you like nonfiction.

5. The Book Thief - Marcus Zuzak
Read this one for an adolescent lit class in college and fell in love with it. It's narrated by Death which totally stuck out to me so you know everyone is going to die. Which is fine, until you meet the characters and want them to somehow just triumph and live forever. It's basically a German take on the whole nazi killing jews thing. And it follows the story of this little girl who's adopted into a German family. I think it was also cool to be reading it for a class and having that debate aspect where you could get others opinions on it too. Our class consensus was a thumbs up.
4. The Westing Game - Ellen Raskin
Another favorite from my childhood, we read this in 8th grade for an English class. I love it because it was the first murder mystery I ever read. So it all took off from there. I was hooked from page one and wanted to read it all the way through but we were supposed to read it in section so we could talk in class. I soooo wanted to know who did it!! And I've recommended it to many people over the years. Gotta love it.
3. The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins
Yet another from that adolescent lit class and I think this was the class's favorite. I don't remember anybody not liking it (not like Twilight or Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, sorry ZH not so much for me) and I think it was the most fun I had in that class just because everyone loved it and wanted to talk about it. Although the Twilight love it or hate it debate was fun as well.
I've recommended this book to literally everyone who's asked for a recommendation. Which is a lot because I work in a library...two actually. And I'm stoked for the movie. But the problem with recommending it is that those that I recommend it to also read the next two which they love as well but I haven't yet since I started working soon after college. I know, I know. They're on my list.
2. Runaway Jury - John Grisham
I loved this book! I read this one summer during high school and couldn't put it down. So many twists and turns and the movie was great as well but it was totally different than the book since it was on guns instead of cigarettes. Soooo good! Totally recommend this one who likes fiction on like the court system or lawyers or just good vs. evil. It's fantastic.
1. Women's Murder Club series - James Patterson
"In margaritas veritas. I'm in." Big surprise here. Not really. Look at the tattoo to the right. Lindsay Boxer the detective, Cindy Thomas the reporter, Claire Washburn the ME and Jill Bernhardt the lawyer. All different crime aspects covered so when you put them all together and drown them in margaritas you get what we call the Women's Murder Club.
"So, this outfit have a name?"
..."We're sort of a murder club."
"Lindsay's deputized us."
"The margarita posse."
...."Homicide chicks. That's who we are. That's what we do."
The books that lead to the show...that got cut off too early but the books are still going so it's okay. Actually 10th Reunion comes out soon. If you look at my bookshelves one of the first thing you'll notice (aside from that they're organized yes i'm a librarian get over it) is that these are the only books with tabs in them. Cause I'm a nerd. And I can't really explain the tab system just that it's there and it helps me keep track because sometimes I'll just pick one up and start from a random tab and know exactly what's going on. I love them. I love them. And I love them. And yes, I always recommend James Patterson to anyone looking for a good mystery writer as well.

Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian - Sherman Alexie this was another adolescent lit class special and we all really liked it. It was really funny and the artwork was a nice touch along with the humor.
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen which is basically a rite of passage for an English major. Classic, I did a project on it for my final portfolio because I find her fascinating, yes I'm a nerd. But I loved doing it because I got to come up with musical playlists for each character and I even made a board game for the thing and what else, oh wrote updated versions of the scenes and all that stuff. So much fun. Also a good story, Pride Prejudice and Zombies...or the first half which is all I got finished before I started working.

This is a week of my favorite things Day Two: Movies
Donuts in my mailbox and Angry Birds on my ipod. All in all an excellent day.
So, day two, as requested means Movies. Since apparently she thinks she knows me well enough to know what they will be. Which she probably does, but I'm going to post them anyway.

I guess it's been promoted to the top five since I fall asleep watching it every night. You'd think that means something, right?

4. Get Smart
Great comedy, but Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway in an action movie? No one expected them to pull it off but they did. Fantastic acting, awesome cast, great script and so much fun to watch.

Yes I'm doubling up the next two even though they're separate movies and I love them both I figured I could fit in more movies this way, deal.
3. Charlie's Angels/Charlie's Angels Full Throttle
Okay, so I'm a nut for Drew. Like website and fanclub kind of nut. Certifiable kind of nut. And I'm also a nut for the Charlie's Angels series - own the dvds, went trick or treating with two friends as the Angels - so when you put the two together I was all over it.
"And that's kickin' your ass."

2. Mummy 1/Mummy Returns
Awesome acting, awesome cast, excellent script, what more could you ask for? Plus I love Egypt! I was obsessed with it all through grade school and high school, it's the only thing I ever wrote research papers on, it's on the list of places I want to see before I die. So, mixing Egyptology with a cast like Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo was like a dream come true.

Honestly, it adds just the right amount of comedy in with action plus history, you learn a lot about Egypt and its customs.

4. Get Smart
Great comedy, but Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway in an action movie? No one expected them to pull it off but they did. Fantastic acting, awesome cast, great script and so much fun to watch.

Yes I'm doubling up the next two even though they're separate movies and I love them both I figured I could fit in more movies this way, deal.
3. Charlie's Angels/Charlie's Angels Full Throttle
Okay, so I'm a nut for Drew. Like website and fanclub kind of nut. Certifiable kind of nut. And I'm also a nut for the Charlie's Angels series - own the dvds, went trick or treating with two friends as the Angels - so when you put the two together I was all over it.
"And that's kickin' your ass."

"I'm just coloring in the chicken feathers."
Said my coworker. I think that's a good summary of life right there. What else do we do in life besides color in some chicken feathers? Hmmm... oh the many places ZH could take that with her gazelle swagger. My favorite life statement is "black in the crevices." That's my life summary as stated by my sister - accidentally of course. She was getting me ready for my job interview, because apparently I couldn't be trusted to dress myself, and said my black nail polish was unprofessional or inappropriate or something so she attacked it with polish removal. Then was mad because she couldn't get it all gone. "There's still black in the crevices!" So I covered it with some silver. Because that's who I am. Still there, like the black, but hidden by who I want the world to see me as. How's that for psychology crap? Blame it on the Sociology minor. Took too many Behavioral Sciences classes in college.
And, she may have been right, I did get that job. Well, jobs.
Congratulations, now you have me saying you're right in writing. Hang on to this. I will deny it in the future.
Today was funny. I had a few more "magnet moments" that I'm still processing. How exactly do you interpret, "You're too cute to work in a library, you should be a teacher."?! What does that even mean? And how do you react to that when the say-er is standing in front of you waiting for a response? Um, thanks? Moving on.
After receiving mixed reviews and watching the movie go past my desk 4 times - I counted - I picked up "The Kids Are All Right" and checked it out. Grandma (25-year-old coworker) says it was good but she'd never watch it again, random library dude said it was brilliantly acted and directed. So I gave it a chance, and I think I agree with Grandma. I mean, there was excellent acting and it was a good storyline, but it's nothing that I want to watch over and over. I give it a 6/10 on the Scale of Awesome. Annette Bening deserves the Oscar nod, I think she'll give Natalie some competition. And I really like that the boy's name is "Laser" that's just awesome. But not as awesome as "the Chad" or "Batgirl" and speaking of Batgirl...
We totally had the Batman debate today at work - which is the best movie, which is the best villain - one of my favorite coworkers is an artist and he knows all about comics so it was cool hearing things from his point of view. But the funniest thing is we never even touched the two latest movies. It was all about the ones from the 90s and then the original series. It's like the newer ones are some seperate entity of their own or something. Although he did point out that Katie Holmes being in the new ones means that both of Tom Cruise's wives have been in Batman movies. (Nicole Kidman played Dr. Chase Meridian in Batman Forever).
Even though Drew is in "Batman Forever" I still have to go with "Batman and Robin" as my favorite. I know it flopped and it's awful and it's the reason that the franchise was delayed how many years but it's so funny! Arnold Schwartzenegger as Mr. Freeze I could take or leave, but Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy with her sidekick Bane - they made the movie! And the introduction of Batgirl, come on!! 8/10 on the S.O.A. I'm really wondering how many more prequels they're going to make. And if they're going to remake the ones already made. This next one has Catwoman in it and Bane. Which is interesting, because I didn't know there was a Bane without a Poison Ivy.
"As I told Lady Freeze when I pulled her plug, this is a one woman show..."
So I finished my homework early yesterday, usually I'd be scrambling at this precise moment since the deadline is midnight tonight. Feels good. Relaxing. Until tomorrow, when I'll read everyone else's and be like, crap. Comic relief, I'm tellin' ya. That's all I got going for me.
Working all day today means only halfday tomorrow and offday Monday. Whatever will I do with actual free time? I'll let you know. More later.
