Work branch then break for lunch and head off to practicum.

Practicum Count-Up 77/90, score!

Don't know what I'll do when practicum gets over, it'll be 9-6 every day.

Not that my 9-6 is boring, but it's been nice to break it up every other day.

Today was interesting at practicum, went to a meeting with a bunch of big shots to talk about computer policy.

These are the first internet computers on campus for patients and because of our location the rules are a little bit more complicated than at a regular library.

We have to worry about outside contacts and all that so rule number one on our internet computers?

No social networking.

Gonna be interesting.

Came home to work on some homework and watch The Voice.

Okay, I love that show, I do, it's in my top 5 with WMC, Charmed, Friends, and Warehouse, but tonight's instant save thing was ridiculous.

First off, I'm pretty sure it was rigged cause even though I voted for Kat and I'm glad she won I saw nothing by Jonny's so I think they need a recount.

Second, you're leaving out half your viewers because you're only including votes from half the nation due to time zones.

I miss that show.

That clip is the first I learned of him leaving, or of there being a new chick. Is she from one of the CSI's?

I refused to watch anymore after they fired JJ and Emily to fund a spinoff. Then hired them back in an attempt to save the fandom.

Didn't work as Paget quit immediately following that year. Not that I blame her, they treated her like crap, and even though JJ is back now full time the show's not the same without Emily so I've stopped watching for good.

Which is a shame cause it used to be really really good.

I remember when I first got hooked, I watched an episode back in college with Sketch and then went out and got seasons 1-3 at Best Buy.

Mom got me season 4 for Xmas or birthday or something, I don't remember, but I do remember locking myself in my room and watching all of season 4 on Kate.

This one is Ziva.

But now Ziva is getting old and full up so soon I'll have to get a different one. Or just use the iPad that I know about but I'm not supposed to remember I'm getting for graduation.

Woops.

I'll have to think of a name for that as well.

Guess it would be fitting to name it after whoever's replacing Ziva on NCIS - another show I've stopped watching - why do all these shows have to kill off my favorite characters?! - who is replacing Ziva? Have they done that already?

Kind of a rough day.

Getting only four hours of sleep didn't help things.

Add to that the fact that I felt like crap so I was pretty much a walking zombie.

Superwoman kept trying to send me home.

I would have called in sick but I had a volunteer coming in for training in the morning and I didn't want to dump that on some poor unsuspecting soul.

And then I realized that the Book Board Game event is TOMORROW and full on panic set in.

Similar to Library Golf but not as extreme.

As that was kind of an extreme event.

This is more laid back.

And I'm thinking like 10 people will attend, which is fine by me.

I almost finished my example today.

By "almost" I mean my comrade and I had fun coming up with game spaces for Harry Potter and finding online pictures to cut out and use as game pieces.

And then an hour and a half later the board was completed.

Now I have to do the currency and cards.

Though instead of chance and community chest I'm going with:
Portkey - cause you're going to be moving either forward or backward depending on if you set a python loose on your cousin or you won the house cup,
and then Spells and Potions - which can lead to you loaning money to the person next to you while being under the imperious curse or getting money for saving your friends because of your clever use of gillyweed.

etc. etc.

It's Harry Potter-based if you couldn't figure that out by yourselves.

I'm having far too much fun with this assignment.

Which makes up for the current assignment I'm taking a break from.

Ugh.

I hate takehome tests.

Especially when they're not actually tests but more like 3 term papers combined into one that's due Friday.

Ugh.

I have two of the three done, now all that's left is the first one. Which should be the easiest but seems to be the hardest.

As is true for most grad school assignments for the perfectionists out there.

But I have to do them tonight because tomorrow is the 3rd and then it's the 4th and those days will involve traveling and fireworks and therefore no homework will be done.

And I don't want to put it all off until Friday night - even though it isn't due until midnight.

Cause that would be irresponsible librarianship.

Or so I'm told.

Is that even a word?

I'm making it one.


Anyway, sadly the homework and board game weren't the most stressful part of today, it was actually that whole future thing that I avoid.

Juwanna and I use to refer to it as the "f" word cause I hated thinking about it.

However, today I was confronted with it as I talked with Superwoman.

Basically the thing is that I work 40 hours a week.

And in the fall I need to do a 90 hour practicum.

At a location that's open the same time as the library I work at and is closed on the weekends.

So I'll have to use vacation time to do my practicum.

90 hours of it.

Which I do not have when you combine it with things like camp - which I will never ever give up, you'll have to pry that from my cold dead hands - and then comprehensive exams which I will also be taking in the fall.

Which again are NOT TESTS, they're papers! 4 of them, basically dissertations and I have a week to finish them.

So why they call them exams I will never know.

Okay, technically it does evaluate your knowledge of the subject, but still!

They should just rename it "the week from hell" as my classmates so lovingly refer to it.

And from now on I'm sure I will too.


Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to do the practicum on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons and make up for the missing 8 hours every week from mid-August through December 1st.

And I really don't want to be stuck working every Saturday to make up for it.

A girl needs her sanity where she can get it and being tied to a desk is not one of such places.


Anyway, the stress from all that made me overreact to stupid stuff and now I'm all headspace.

Which makes writing these papers even more difficult.

I'm thinking about quitting for the night and finishing question number one on Friday night.

Give me some time to think and confer with people about ideas.

Cause I'm stuck.

Yeah, let's go with that.

And yes, for once in my life I have the patience and persistence to follow through with something.

Even if it is just rambling on virtual paper.

I know that is shocking to some people, especially since I was such an introvert when it first started.

Though years of working in public service seems to have changed that.

Which I didn't realize until it was pointed out to me.

I don't even remember how it came up, and I'm sure it's on here somewhere, but I was talking to Joe Studley and I was like, "but I am shy!" and Glee-Loving Boss just appears out of nowhere and goes "since when?!"

Perfect timing.

But I guess he was right.

And that was 2010, it's only gotten worse now that I'm in charge of stuff.

Speaking of being in charge of stuff, sometimes that sucks.

I had 2 people call me yesterday about volunteer work and another 2 call me today.

Yes, things do pick up in the summer, but not that much.

I have one coming in to train on Tuesday, another on Wednesday and after that I am just out of space.

Cause I already got a new one started last week!

So the suckish part is having to turn people down. Though I usually just direct them to a different branch.

That's the joy about working in a library system.

Another joy about working for a library system?

Getting to go to fun library conferences.

I know, some of you think that's an oxymoron, but I'm actually excited about this next one.

And it has great timing and placement.

Big teen event put on by the SLJ - School Library Journal, it's a magazine - it's basically a big online thing with a bunch of Young Adult authors. They talk about their books and then there's Q&A with the authors.

Gonna be fun, and guess where our session is being hosted!

Anyway, I'm going to the library that just happens to be in his town and it's an all day thing which means I can go out there the night before and bring my cat with me cause the week after that IS CAMP J!!

I'm sure my mother is thrilled to read about that.

She just loves watching my cat while I'm gone.

But he likes the farmhouse.

And he doesn't bite there cause dad will stick him outside with the mean outdoor cats.

Plus he loves his grandma.

She hates it when I call her that.

But then she gives him Christmas presents and signs them "from grandma" so she really brings it on herself.

Today was boring as the library was dead.

Came home and watched the rest of Doc Martin season two.

I'm liking it.

Mostly because it has Ash in it from Murder in Suburbia - Catherine Catz - but also because the doctor is just so rude and oblivious to all that's going on around him, it's highly entertaining.

So I play this game on the drive home.

I drive the same route every night so you get to know traffic patterns and all that. Anyway, if I go a certain speed with no car in front of me I can hit every green light a split second before it turns yellow all the way to my apartment.

However, if there is a car in front of me I hit every red light.

Not one, all.

So of course there was this obnoxious car going under the speed limit and I can't pass them so we hit all the lights.

He sucks at that game.

Oh my god, so I'm watching Jennifer Lawrence on David Letterman, was I the only one who got her First Wives Club reference?

Has no one else seen that movie?

Did people think that she would actually insult Meryl Streep like that?

I'm sorry, tangent.

So, today was the scavenger hunt.

I spent the majority of the day FTFO.

Even this morning making changes and then the hour before realize that one of my clues was checked out so my wonderful Trainee found me a different book and wrote the clue.

But the kids seemed to like it.

Didn't think it was lame. Or at least that's what they said.

And they learned stuff.

Or seemed to.

I had fun making it, though it took like months on and off.

Gotta work with the off desk time all I can.

Anyway, so they paired off and I had 5 sets of clues - cause I didn't want them to just follow each other around the library. Each of the clues was based around the life of a Nebraska author featured in our in-house special library.

They started with microfilm and OF COURSE today of all days some dude decides to camp out on one of the machines and then the articles take a while to find plus the third machine takes forever to load and then neither of them print so I had some skip ahead to the next clues and then work their way around, whatever, after they showed me the article - instead of printing it off and bringing it to me - I gave them their next clue which was a call number to a biography which they had to locate which then led them to adult nonfiction then to adult fiction which then led them to finding information in a specific database - tied to their subject matter - that they had to show me and then after the database was the music section and then we all ended up on 3rd.

Meanwhile, on the backs of all these task/clues were bonus questions specifically about our library system. What are the full names of all the branches? (look for a business card at the desk) Who is ours named after and why? (ask a staff member) What year did we open? (look for a plaque outside the entrance) What animal is hanging in Youth services? What color is this person's portrait's frame? etc. etc. There were more but I'm rambling.

But they all got them right and they took the time to answer them and to go to all these places in the library and they did it without complaint so I'm proud of them.

Anyway, it ended with an awesome tour by our in-house special librarian. Who is excellent. And I'm pretty sure she gets cabin fever cause almost every day I see her fixing displays on first floor.

Love it.

But she had fun with it and the kids seemed to like it. Was a good refresher for me. Got my C-NAMES down.

Long story.

Anyway, that was pretty much all afternoon and really the only thing from the morning was training new staff to work over at one of the other branches. This time there's 3 new girls - one of which used to work at the work branch and is back. The other haven't worked at libraries before. All 3 are pretty awesome and said we hadn't scared them off and they are coming back again tomorrow so, job well done.

And that was my day.

Woohoo, shifted 93 shelves in under two hours with Fearless Leader.

That's gotta be some kind of record man.

We're shifting our oversize books into the regular collection - originally they were along the outside walls because they didn't fit on the regular shelves.

Anyway, so we're shifting everything toward the front meanwhile adjusting the shelves. So we each had a cart, I pulled and took the cart to her, meanwhile she shelved everything on the new shelf and then BossLady adjusted the shelves as we went along.

Then after work the boyfriend surprised me. Was on the phone with him on the way home, pulled in the driveway and he was right behind me. Sneaky man. No idea he would come, but it was our only night before he goes on his trip and I start camp stuff.

Tomorrow, I'm stoked.

We watched Spaceballs and The Mummy. I found my comics - I got these awesome Mummy comics in Chicago - and ever since I've had a craving to watch it. Ancient Egypt man, it's my downfall. Obsession turned crazy and it's all because of those movies.

And as Spaceballs is a classic and I had not yet watched it we went with that one first.

I told him I was going to be boring girlfriend, was exhausted after the shift but we had fun, put up with my crap. He's a good boyfriend.

Anything after 1AM and I'm screwed. Which is sad as before that was when I did all my homework, watched music, jammed out, etc. Now I'm old.

so, today was fun. remember how yesterday i volunteered for three shifts because i'm crazy? apparently now i'm certifiable cause i did it again today. i feel a bit like ado annie but i'm fine with that. i like working there and i was just gonna work at the other library anyway, not a big deal, they switched around my hours. hopefully everyone will be healthy by tomorrow. i haven't been to the other library since like...saturday? maybe... yeah saturday. tonight i got to work with one of my favorite people so everything was all worth it.

we scanned all the adult paperbacks today and i was introduced to the wonder that is nascar romance. didn't know there was such a thing did you? me either, but i guess everyone needs love, even someone who drives around in circles for hours.

i spent the time between shifts working on my homework for saturday. i finished the graphic, now i just have to finish the paper. i have lots of notes - will have to work on it tomorrow during the day on breaks n lunch n stuff. that means it'll be take-your-backpack-to-work day. my boss was hilarious, i was rambling about the project cause i'm excited and i ramble when i'm excited...or frustrated or whatever which you've probably noticed...anyway i was like i just have to ramble for a page about it and she was like, "i wouldn't respect you if you couldn't ramble for a page." haha, oh the support. maybe i will upload a pic of the graphic once everything is all finished.

so excited for tomorrow night, actual plans that don't involve work. and i'll be able to follow thru because each branch closes at 6 on friday and saturday so i won't have to cover for anyone at night.

all for now, eating popcorn (supper) and watching some retro tv. can't say what as it will give away the title's origin. i will say that craig ferguson does an excellent impression of the main character. "did somebody say murder?!" i used to watch him every night for two whole years, craziness! but he's all different now that he's married and lost the sound machine. 'welcome back my cheeky monkeys' my favorite sound effect was the scream when he would do an impression of the 'scream' painting. too funny.
