he who jumps like three-legged cricket...will fall like cross-eyed water buffalo.

Ah, a day off.

And I have Friday off too so this is just weird.

But good weird.

Slept in - but only 'til like 9 so that doesn't really count - did some research on BISAC and then went out the library in Mayberry to interview their director because they use the BISAC method.

Because apparently I'm an adult and need to do adult things like interview important people.

And I thought it might help to talk to someone who's actually went through the transition process.

We're lucky though because there's nothing to transition because we're starting from scratch.

Anyway, the interview went well. Learned a lot about the process and examples of subject headings. After the interview she showed me around the building. They're doing a lot of construction and opening up the basement to the public so there were workmen everywhere.

After the interview came back and took a nap.

It was glorious.

Attempted to watch GI Joe #2 but chose instead to fall asleep around the halfway point.

I'll finish the rest later.

Then the boyfriend came over, we watched the rest of Mr. & Mrs. Smith before he headed back to go to work.

I hate that we work different shifts. And live an hour apart. Totally kills datenight having a deadline like that.

Classes start this week so after he left I posted to the discussion board. There are 23 of us but I was the first one to post. So that's a good sign for me, I think. Tomorrow is also my first day of practicum so I'll work in the morning and then head over there in the afternoon. A little nervous. But he's completely laid back so it's more about the environment than the boss.

After that is dinner with the Cool Aunt as we haven't done that in a while. Jalapeno margaritas - it's gonna be awesome.

Alright, all I got for today.

On to the music:

Some are reaching, Few are there, Wandering from a hero's chair.

Today was one for the record books.

I broke a door.

Not on purpose.

I'll get there.

Staff meeting in the morning. Presented on the conference I attended before camp at the boyfriend's library.

Huzzah for new teen material. I bought two of the books tonight - I'll get there too.

I learned a lot at the conference but the highlights I relayed were: "make your fiction seem like nonfiction. if it's not believable then no one will finish it," and "if your characters say 'do it my way' you do it their way or you'll have a crappy book", but I forgot "writing is the next best thing to napping". woops.

I enjoy writers. They are highly entertaining.

After the meeting I checked in magazines, trained a volunteer on how to scan media, worked the desk, got a hamburger for lunch, and all was fine and boring until I broke the door.

Okay first off, it wasn't my fault. I was going into the bathroom and the stall door just fell off.

Like literally fell off.

Dropped and bounced.

I screamed like a teenager, so loud that a coworker busted in freaking out.

We looked and there were metal shavings on the ground. Apparently the door hinge had been on its way out for a while, it just happened to officially fall when I was there to take the blame.

The best part of the whole situation was having to explain it to my supervisor cause he had to call to get it fixed.

Of course Superwoman was gone, Girlscout was in a meeting, BossLady was at lunch, so I went downstairs to Supervisor Alley and there was the Old New Guy sitting innocently at his desk...

He found it entertaining.

I did too.

After the whole shock factor wore off.

It literally just dropped and bounced.

And what would you have done in that situation other than scream and attempt to catch it?

Let it drop I guess.

It was a lot heavier than I thought it would be so I just ended up leaning it against the wall.

And then of course I had to take a picture.

Woops.

Door Killer.

Don't know my own strength.

Anyway, after that disaster things calmed down a bit 'til Mom showed up and scared the crap out of me at the desk.

But she brought zucchini bread and catfood so it's okay.

Shouldn't mix those two up, that'd be bad.

Saving the bread for breakfast tomorrow, yay for food in my fridge!

After things had calmed down I took a break to call another librarian. For my practicum we're setting up that remote library and we're going to use BISAC instead of Dewey so on Monday - my day off - I'm going to go visit a library using BISAC and talk to their librarian.

It's the one in my college town so maybe I'll swing by campus just for fun.

Not.

And Mr. Tom aka my Mr. Bossman Sir for my practicum says it will count toward my hours as it is for research purposes.

Huzzah!

Should be fun.

After work I met up with the Queen of Awesome for supper and a trip to Barnes and Noble.

Bought far too many books, but who doesn't while in Barnes and Noble?

I need to just go in there with a set list and not sway from it.

But that won't happen.

Got Second Sister's birthday present - which was the original intent - ate some good food, talked some girl talk, it was good to catch up as we haven't in a while.

And then of course ran into Oldest Sister, Squirt and Squirt's BFF in the parking lot.

They were headed where we ate supper, but as it was freezing in there we had left and were headed back to Barnes and Noble to jam in the much warmer cafe area.

"My cat weighs 23 pounds and 6 ounces."
"I have a child who weighs less than that."

Should really turn this dinner out thing into a monthly deal just for sanity purposes.

Bought another novel while we were there cause I had forgot about it until I saw something like it.

Huzzah for Richard Castle.

He is wicked awesome.

After our night out on the town I hit up Target for groceries. Cause for some weird reason I buy them there instead of an actual grocery store. Probably because I get my media, shoes, and all that there too, I'm all about one-stop shopping.

Came home, fed the cat, now I'm jamming out and watching Wipeout re-runs cause my DVR is full.

Gonna post this and crash.

I speak whale.

Okay, fastest post in history of posts.

You'll have to speed read it to get the full effect.

Ready go.

Today was good.

Met up with my practicum rep and it was awesome. For my 90 hour practicum I basically get to build a remote library from scratch. And we're gonna use the BISAC method - which is bookstore, not Dewey for those of you who just went, what? - so I'm gonna look into subject headings we should have and then we're gonna hit up the library's booksale and stock up to start it.

I'm stoked.

Was nervous cause I wasn't sure what to expect but now I feel so much better.

Though I still have to write up the plan and draft schedule to send to the Library Goddess to approve.

Got an impromptu text from Oldest Sister saying she was going out to the farmhouse to light off fireworks so I went too - taking with my three boxes, though I didn't even get through one of them.

Mostly cause I'm saving all the stuff that the boyfriend and I bought together so that we can light it on the 4th, though I wasn't aware of how much I had left over from last year.

We actually had a grill out at dad's cabin by the pond.

Oh yes, remember the cabin that we all had to help build?

I did a whole like 2 nails with the nail gun and freaked out the whole time?

Anyway, so it's finished and has been moved next to the pond on a cement block and soon there will be electricity and air conditioning.

And I'm hoping some outdoor lighting.

Cause I couldn't see anything without lanterns.

Bubby, Squirt and I threw a lot of firecrackers off the dock and into the pond in order to make a splash.

Bubby was successful in spraying us with pond water.

Which was gross.

I was throwing them farther away than that.

And Dad of course brought out his favorite fireworks that he bought in high school and lit one of those on the dock.

And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Mom is mad cause I got him more.

Sort of, they don't make those anymore, but I got him the runner-up to them.

Woops.

Anyway, it was fun. We ate hamburgers and smores and jammed in the cabin.

Had our tank war.

I won, take that!

Squirt had a mega tank and Bubby laid his out strategically with firecrackers but I think it was my massive frogs in the back row that did it.

Victory.

Are you still speed reading cause I'm speed typing, this is 3 minutes so far.

Didn't really light any big ones off cause like I said, I'm saving them but my brother did light off a few.

Bubby and I continually quoted Finding Nemo.

"You touched the butt!"

"I speak whale."

"You guys made me ink."

Those are literally the only lines I remember so they were the ones we kept repeating.

To the point where Mom was totally confused.

Quote of the day:

Bubby: "I'm not gonna twerk in front of grandma!"

It's a dance, nevermind.

Still speed typing, this is 5 minutes.

Okay, what am I missing?

Ummm.....meeting, dinner, fireworks, crazy family....think that's all I got.

Oh, except where Squirt drove up to the house.

"How do you turn on the lights?"

Thought I was gonna die.

Song of the day:

okay, now I have to think.

aw man, I was doing so well.

Let's go with clips instead.

swim away!

oh, favorite youtube comment ever:

Two whales walk into a bar.
"AAAAOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOAAAAAA, AOUUUUUUAAAA OOOOO," says the first whale.
The second whale replies, "Shut up, Steve, you're drunk."

yay, 10 minutes and I'm done!

NLA 2012 Day One - The Full Monica

2011 NLA Highlights: Green Bags and Nametags

I survived day one of the NLA annual conference.

Left the apartment this morning at 6AM and just got back at 9:45PM.

I didn't have to be there until 8, but thinking there would be traffic and I would get lost I left like an hour earlier than I needed to. After stopping for gas and cash I arrived at like 7:08. So I jammed in the lobby with Queen of the Known Universe and fellow LCLers. There were a lot of us there, I can count at least 12 off the top of my head. Though by the dinner banquet we were down to four.

Showed up with nothing but cereal and a diet dr. pepper and came home with a bag full of free stuff.

What is it about conferences or home and garden shows that turn you into a kleptomaniac? I mean seriously. It's my goal to go to each of the booths and get a pen or ruler or candy or whatever so I came home with this bag full of stuff and went, crap. Now what am I gonna do with it?

Granted the majority of the stuff taking up space in the bag is presents - I got something for mom, dad, the cool aunt and the boyfriend but i'm not done shopping for them yet.

And then of course came the t-shirt that the Library Goddess bought me cause she's awesome and spoils us. It's blue with the Superman logo on the front except instead of a giant S it's a giant L.

Should write in a "SA" after the L so it's a true statement as I am a Library Service Associate and not quite yet a Librarian.

So, our homework assignment from Boss's Boss's Boss is to meet someone, talk to them about what they do and then write about it to her in an email.

I think I've done that like 50 times over. And the thing about working with the Library Goddess is that she's so enthusiastic so if she doesn't know someone she'll go introduce herself and take you along with her. Like today, I met two published authors - Stephanie Bodeen aka S.A. Bodeen who wrote "The Compound" which is a Golden Sower nominee and Mary Downing Hahn - author of about 50 kids books but "Closed for the Season" was also a Golden Sower nominee, guessing the Cool Aunt is super jealous - and about 80 students in the program.

I didn't meet Tom Osborne but I did listen to him speak, and my Trainee met him in the parking lot so that's exciting.

We gave him a standing ovation. We did the a couple of times but he was the only one I actually knew. Which is amusing. People like stood up for this one chick and clapped and I was like, okay I should probably stand and clap. Who's this again?

I did learn a lot as well. As much as it physically pains me to say it, like literally pains me I'm intrigued by BISAC. I mean, I'm Dewey through and through, for serious, I think that the books are already divided up by genre why do they need to do it again with different labels, it would a pain and awful and just something else we'd have to adjust to if we switched over - but listening to a presentation about this library turning just their YA area into BISAC and having its circulation like triple intrigues me cause we don't get a lot of circulation for our nonfiction YA material. Perhaps if we had more signage and separated it out it may get more attention.

Except we don't have a lot of nonfiction for YA so that'd be something to work on first.

I'll keep it in mind. That and an App session were the only two I attended all the way through. The rest of the day I was in the booth or taking pictures of presentations if they were given by staff/students/alum of the Missouri program.

Taking pictures is fun until you get to like the second or third presentation on your list and everyone glares at you cause you're walking in late, then your camera makes noises and then you leave early getting even more glares. Blah.

Now I'll officially have to join NLA. Oh yeah, that's another person I met - the president of NLA, well as of a couple hours ago before she passed on the golden gavel to someone else. But I'll do it online this week after the dues are changed. And I'm a student so I get in for cheaper.

Hung out a lot with both of my bosses aka Superwoman and the Library Goddess. They were having an argument as to who is Boss #1 and who is Boss #2. I told them it was up to them to duke it out. It was fun hanging out with them.

I actually saw about 80 classmates who all know me cause I'm the grad assistant but I'm still learning names so I'm like, "Hey!" *pause to look at name tag* "Did you register for the iTunes giftcard raffle yet?" Thank god for nametags, seriously. My lanyard is purple and pretty but clashes with my yellow Mizzou tag.

New concept to take home from the conference but won't include in my report to the Boss's Boss's Boss:
-"The Full Monica" aka the female version of the Full Monty

Oh, and we all got our pictures taken with a cardboard cutout of Sheldon Cooper which will probably become my profile picture.

Tomorrow I'll get one with Darth Vader.

Clip of the day as recommended by the boyfriend.

Parody of a pretty much already parody.
